Wow, I'm surprised she would be that young. Then again, I suppose any older and she and Tsut'e (sp?) would have been munamtxa already.

I've also seen that she would be 18 but I wonder...Do they age slower than humans or is that in actual earth years.

Edit: Didn't realise Jake's real age, disregard my comment.

Quote
<MulleDK19> Yesterday I started with "A man was walking along the road, and suddenly got hit by a wheelchair going 250 miles per hour"
<MulleDK19> it ended with: "Death of a wheelchair - On the road since 1250"

Doolio

from the script also:
QuoteJAKE SULLY, a scarred and scruffy combat vet, sitting in a
beat up carbon-fiber wheelchair.  At 22, his eyes are
hardened by the wisdom and wariness of one who has endured
pain beyond his years.

frankly, the late teens suit her perfectly, look at her emotional reactions, and her posture, acting, everything. remember the scene when she's not thrilled about mo'at giving her the task to become jake's mentor, for instance. notice jake's behavioral patterns too, he also appears very young, judging from that. i mean, look at them in the scene prior to mating, "ninat is the best singer wink wink', 'but i dont want ninat' etc.

I think that behaviour is not a good indication of age.  Equating Neytiri's reaction to youth is only subjective, and not a reliable gage.

There are people who are more expressive, and people who are less expressive.  I have known 92 year old women to act like they excited and are ready to go to a first prom on a date, and 20 year old women who act like leaving your coffee cup on the table would bring the world to an abrupt end.  I have known 36 year olds to publicly pout, stomp and throw fits when they could not have their favorite show on the TV.  Not to state the obvious here, but I don't think Neytiri revealed her age with her behavior.  Maturity is another subjective term I think we should stay away from, because that is nothing but an opinion, and still does not reveal age.

The respect for ones elders, and frustrations with how elders overrule their youngers, is a cultural norm for the Na'vi it would seem. The reason I think this, is Neytiri was not admonished for complaining, and she obeyed the commands of Mo'at with only a mild/brief protest.

The personality traits of Neytiri are less cynical, more spiritual, and less stress induced than human societies are in urban cultures.  She has never worked in an office environment where she would be discouraged from showing her feelings on the risk of loosing out on a promotion, or a pay hike.  That is not a sign of immaturity, it is a sign of being bereft of corruption of the organics of living a life as one was meant to live it, free of arbitrary rules meant to make life easier for the bosses.

yes, i agree on that too, she is expressive because she is in a such environmemnt. i agree with the rest of your post, i wasn't talking about immaturity or her expressivnes, it's just the atmospheric, intuitive feeling that i get from watching the movie, and i presumed on the first watching that she is in her late teens. it's just that the movie sends that information to the viewers, and i think that cameron incorporated that effect in purpose. also, i do think that her behaviour is very human in some percentage, for the reason of wanting the audience to identify with her as a character.
when i said that you should lool at her behaviour, i didn't meant that you should look at her as an urban human person, i meant more fundamentally. with all counted in, i still get a very strong impression that she is a very young na'vi woman when watching the movie.

I think you are far too much corrupt by the modern world. This is neolithic society and a different species.
Neytiri is mature in all but only one way. She has enough influence to overrule Tsu`Tey and to be Jake`s teacher. I dont know but it seems to me she has to know a lot to be trusted whit such a task.

Great discussion topic, thanks for bring it up lihass!

Txur'Itan, I completely agree that chronological age is not a determining factor in how someone behaves. I think that Neytiri is a special case. She is being raised to be the next Tsahik/Spiritual Leader and as such I would reason that she is being "conditioned" by Mo'at (current spiritual leader) to see what is unseen, hear what is unsaid, and have a generally deeper view than one of her age.

That being said, I think that Zoe Saldana did a great job of portraying this complicated, multi-layered woman who is both wise and yet juvenile in some ways. She can be playful and also show extreme reverence for things which are sacred to her and the Na'vi.

Both Neytiri and Jake are this type of combination; they have seem some harsh things in their short years giving them more understanding. Jake because of being in combat situations and Neytiri because her entire life has been dangerous one (Pandora is an unforgiving place). Add the training each of them has had (both physically and mentally) and you get very interesting characters.

Besides, it's good to know that they both have long lives ahead of them. ;)

I think that she is a female, not a "woman"... lol

But despite the actual age of Neytiri, you can say she has just become an adult.

Txura Tirea

I don't think the Na'vi get older at the same rate as humans.

I got this quote from the thread "About Grace's avatar...":
Quote from: Ayfa'liyä omumyu"Of all the avatars, Grace was the most difficult to realize, as it had to represent a hybrid of a Na'vi and a much younger Sigourney Weaver to accommodate the story point that Grace's avatar had been created 18 years in the past. To work off reference of Weaver at the appropriate age, SWS (Stan Winston Studio) brought pictures of the actress as she had appeared in Alien 3 into ZBrush, and sculpted the avatar features from those photos."

So in 18 years Grace became much older than her avatar, if I understand this correctly. This could mean Neytiri is much older than she looks like.

no, this is a women, tsuthey say : you mated with this woman?, female is for animal, na'vi are not human, but no animal :P, respect the na'vi!

hm, for the old of neytiri, i think is hard to find, because, she very mature, very spiritual, and strong warrior , if you see only this, give easy 26-28 years old. but, the body is young, no scar, sweet, pure, and if i can say this : sexy x), like a 18-19 years women.

but the na'vi are different , not human, we dont know when na'vi become really "mature", i think na'vi become mature very young, because he are with the forest, the spirit, he must learn fast if he want survive, and you can see when jake go take this ikran to become hunter, look the other na'vi, he are very young, not like jake.

i think she are little younger than jake or the same old

i think neytiri , if i see humain emotion, and other, have around : 22-24 human years

but the na'vi age rate, is not the same of the human, is not really "22-24 years"but for a human she look like this, i hope you understand x)

my english is bad i know, i hope you can understand this easy, i speak french lol, i try speak english correcly, i dont use translator.(i try speak na'vi too, but not easy x))

Jake`s 22.
So he`s 4 years older than her.
He has seen a lot of crap and has suffered (from his wound) so he`s been prematurely aged i can say.

That's pretty strange, because Jake's avatar was grown in about 3 years (in its reference frame), so they seem to grow much more quickly.
