Parkers Office on Pandora (RDA)
« on: February 01, 2010, 12:25:00 am »
OK was watching the movie just at my local theater not in 3d just to study the na'vi culture and stuff in the movie with out being suckend into all the AMAZING  visual works James did and I noticed hanging in a lighted frame in Selfridges (Parker the RDA Jerk) looks like maybe a Na'vi artifact maybe like a necklace  with feathers and as i have been observing Parker he keeps his eye's on the prize but i sense maybe he feels bad for the Na'vi or something if he hates them or does not care about them why put an artifact in a lighted frame and hang it in his office next to the RDA logo just saying hey also fell free to post other things that are sort of just in the background of the movie tht are strange or coll or what ever.

From what I got from the movie, Parker did care a little about the Na'vi, but he cared about mining unobtanium more. When Hometree fell, he sighed and slightly shook his head. However, he could have been thinking, "sigh, it's finally over."
My uncle's dog came over a little less than one week ago. I stupidly left the computer plug on the floor. That night, his dog chewed it up. So, the next morning, I go looking for the plug and I find a chewed up piece of metal. I sadly cannot purchase a new plug right now, and my computer's battery is out. I'm at my public library.

Also, I discovered this promising "small business" film company called Mirror Entertainment. It looks really promising: http://www.mirrorente

Of course, it could be analogous to a trophy...  He could be THAT heartless.  It could also be something from the first (peaceful) encounters with the Na'Vi...

That is something that I would want to see is just when humans first discover what Pandora is and that there is other life out among the stars and the very first encounter between human and Na'vi maybe if Cameron were to turn it into s tv series when 3D TV get's bug or make like movie 4 all about the early years or maybe sort of like a mock documentary (movie 4 not confirmed).

In the 2007 script, Parker protests to quartich right before quartich begins the attack on the tree of souls.

and he did do a nice sad face when he was marching onto the shuttle at the end of the movie.

I think he could be that heartless, too.  >:(

The last movie I saw Giovanni Ribisi in was Boiler Room. It's hard to not feel just a little bit sad for the character he plays in that movie... But, in Boiler Room, I love that he plays to be the arrogant character who is JUST ASKING to be cut off at the knees by a power he barely knows anything about (FBI/Eywa).

I hope he becomes an even bigger jerk in Avatar 2/3. Corporate power (or dominance, over the planet?) seems to almost demand this. :D

And after the attack on Hometree. He's with the group of people watching on video monitors, and they all look pretty horrified.

I personally don't think that he really wanted the Na'vi to die at least not in mass amounts and when ever you see something bad actually happen it is always way worse than the version drawn on paper. Parker did use this line how ever "Killing the indigenous looks bad, but there is one thing investors hate more than bad press and that's a bad quarterly out turn". and then went on to say something like I don't to kill them but if we can't find a diplomatic solution it is going to have to be all stick. So the sad face at the end was probably a mix of him having to deal with a whole lot of blood on his hands and the oh crap I am in big trouble when we get back to earth, and how did I lose this much cash. $20 M a kilo is some serous money but I would never take that many innocent lives and destroy a people home like that I would have to say screw this and forget the cash.

I don't think Parker is entirely heartless. I think he was concerned to a point about the magnitude of what he was getting himself into. Remember the look on his face when the attack on the tree of souls starts? (When all the aircraft are taking off, the camera pans to Parker who has an expression of worry on his face). All the stuff in his office are relics of items he's collected in the skirmishes with the Na'vi. Displayed for whatever reason.

So is the sequel an introspective on how the Na'vi and Humans can work together?

(Parker is the only one that remains closely connected to The Corporation's desires. I mean, the "war-lover" Quaritch is dead.)

That would have double meaning for the planet. Not just the Na'vi that live there in Avatar 1, but the Humans as well on 2/3?

We don't know what the sequel will be. So rumors are flying around the internet, but they are most likely just that - rumors. It will be interesting to see how things are going in the sequel. There are so many open ended arcs that could be re-visited in the upcoming sequels.

I know, we're all reading tea leaves here, but I think that greed does awful things to corporations and individuals. I think that RDA will continue to try to obtain unobtainium (God only knows why Cameron gave THAT name... part of the plot was given away...!) but I suppose that I shouldn't be surprised if the Na'vi somehow "donate" something other than unobtanium to Earth so Gaia can be restored. Or accept Human immigrants from Earth to live on Pandora.

unobtainium is a classic science fiction trope.  It's also used in real science to describe materials needed for specific applications that are currently not known to exist yet.  For example, NASA used the term to describe the heat resistant stuff on shuttles for re-entry when they were first trying to get into space.  At least that's what I hear.

BACK ON TOPIC,
Parker's little artifacts may be his way of trying to sympathize?  I know it might be a little far fetched, but he had to put up with a lot of pressure and make big decisions that affected the eco-system and indigenous peoples.  Perhaps when he escapes into his office the artifacts bring him back to reality.

I think I remember the ASG mentioning Na'vi items are highly valued on Earth.  I took his displaying them more to be an indication of his focus on monetary concerns.

And I agree that the movie makes a little effort to paint him as not totally heartless.

The way that Cameron ended Avatar left a ton of possibilities that could be stretched very easily way past just the next two movies (the 3rd avatar has been confirmed right?) I tink we could end up with as many as 6 Avatar movies and maybe a TV (3D TV) series (what do you guys think of a TV series?

Not sure about 6 Avatar movies, but the trilogy has been confirmed by Cameron. I'll be happy with 3 movies. But if they make more I'll definitely see them as long as the Sequels are quality works. Nothing destroys a franchise faster than crappy sequels. Cameron knows his stuff though, so i don't we'll be disappointed at all.
