questions about the movie
« on: August 12, 2011, 04:28:07 pm »
I have some questions about the movie

question 1: How old was Jake in the movie? not of how old Sam Worthington was, but the character Jake Sully?
question 2: What is the story about Jake of how he was been paralyzed, how did it happen? If somebody knows this(he was even paralyzed in the extended edition)
question 3: How old is Neytiri?

In screenplay (2007) 22 years old. About mowie I don't know.
On war. No details.
In screenplay (2007) By human eyes, it seems like a 18 year old.

IMDB says Sam Worthington is thirty five that's a lot older than Jake!

There's a couple of hints about Jake's military life.
Avatar opens with Jake telling us "When I was lying there in the VA hospital, with a big hole blown through the middle of my life"
Then a little later "There's no such thing as an ex-marine. I may be out, but you never loose the attitude." and "They can fix a spinal, if you got the money, but not on vet benefits, not in this economy"
Quaritch calls him Corporal, he mentions "Venezuela, that was some mean bush" and "I was first recon myself,".
However Jake tells Eywa to take a look into Grace's memories, see the world they come from, "there's no green there, they killed their mother".
Also, when pleading with Selfridge, Grace say's "Are you going to kill children?", Jake adds "You don't want that kind of blood on your hands, believe me."

So, Marine Corporal Jake Sully was first recon in a war in Venezuela. Is responsible for the deaths of children, or believes he is. Venezuela had bush but no longer has, presumably the war he fought in had something to do with this. At some point he was injured and shipped out. Now lives on vet benefits, until .....

Part way into page thirty five of the 2007 scriptment "In human age she would be 18."

None of this is new btw.

I don't think venezuela did have any plants - in the original script, Jake has never even seen a forest before. I think that was more a metaphor for something on Quaritch's part.

I pictured rough scrub, forest that had been clearcut some years earlier and begun to regenerate, with nothing much over thirty feet high. His experience and therefore expectations would have left him unprepared for what awaited on Pandora. Imho.

I agree with all the above statements.
Ma muntxate (my wife) has told me that the jungles of Pandora, viewed from the sky, looked liked the jungles of VietNam.  Agent Orange defoliated those trees and poisoned the waters, but the warfare left desolate the land, forests were turned into toothpicks.
I was very happy that Trudy Chacon is depicted as Native American. Many in Nam were also.  Not only is she and her "war pony" painted in war paint, but she was wearing a Native American symbol on her arm representing the universe and the circle of life.  MaNiri Te immediately identified with Rogue One.
During Vietnam also was the (second) siege at Wounded Knee.  The Native American helicopter pilots were NOT allowed to R&R Stateside (Rest and Relaxation in the United States.  Undoubtly there would form a squadron of Rogue Warrior!  The Avatar movie resonated on many levels for us.

I think that was a piece of Na'vi jewellery - she didn't have it before, and meets them in a deleted scene. The root of her name is Spanish rather than native American, although clearly it does work for any number of cultures, which I think is clever writing how it does that without being overtly 'of' one.

Clever writing? Or are there a lot of native people all round Rrta facing the exact same problems?

Kaltxi ma Human No More! Many Native American people in the SouthWest have Spanish Surnames.
Some are named O'Reilley and O'Brian. (It all depends on oon which Indian Agent registered their grandparents!) That aside, I would love to see the scene where Trudy meets the Na'vi. Is it in the Collector's edition? or did it ever get past scriptment?

Chacon is a Mexican surname, and I agree that O'Malley and O'Reilley are Irish surnames.  But her racial ancestry is unimportant when one realizes that it is an ioi, an ornamental badge, handcrafted to resemble the circular wings (ducted fans) of her bird.  (I now personally identify with the unnamed chacter who presented her the ioi!)
I watched the scene where her bird is on the ground and is being painted with Tsamopin(warpaint) and she is teaching about the doorgun! That explains why she has warpaint on her face and why she is wearing, what I thought was, a medicine wheel.
