I know this exists. I love MST3K (probably watched >80% of the episodes), Rifftrax and Cinematic Titanic. But I'm not going to watch this. I just don't want to.
Please tell me if you see mistakes in a Na'vi post of mine. It's the only way I'll learn. :P

Avatar is the story of just how pretty a jungle planet can look in 3D, and maybe there are some people fighting in it or whatever.

Did this guy watch the movie, or just look at the posters and make assumptions?

How would I rate this? 2 /10, and I think that's being more than fair.

To Mike, Kevin, and Bill .....
If you don't like the movie then that's down to your personal tastes and preferences. You have the right to hold any opinions you wish about the movie - but I won't necessarily agree with them.
My question is this:- Do you have the creative talent and ability to create a comparable work?

Looking at the poster and reading the description, I think this looks funny, but a bit ridiculous as well. :P Evidently, I should watch it to create a real opinion about it - I'm not so sure I want to, though! ::)

I think you just completely missed the point of rifftrax.

They aren't reviewers.  Their sole purpose in publishing these is to riff on movies.  Any movie.  Nothing is safe.  That goes doubly for popular movies.  The top grossing movie of all time practically has a mile wide bullseye on it for these sorts of things.

This started as Mystery Science Theater 3000.  If you've never seen it, it was a comedy series where the premise was someone was trapped on a satellite by an evil scientist and forced to watch bad movies (Typically sci-fi or horror B-movies), with his only companions a few robots.  So they would spend the whole time wisecracking about the movie and picking it apart to keep sane.  The show was presented as showing the movie, with the man and his robots silhouetted in front of it in a row of movie seats.

After it was cancelled, Rifftrax was created to continue the similar style of comedy, but lacking the story around it, or the need to negotiate a license the movies, since they don't actually rebroadcast them like MST3k did.  This opened them up beyond the B-movie genre into mainstream popular movies.  So they still do the same style biting commentary, but for any movie, no matter how bad or good.

I keep meaning to get the Avatar rifftrax.  I expect it will contain some of the same cracks that we've heard ad-nauseam, but that's what I expect from rifftrax.

It's all meant in lighthearted fun, not as a scathing review of the movie.

I completely agree. I love MST3K.

I also think that if one really loves a movie/world/fanbase, they should have the capacity to make fun of it. Now, that doesn't mean I'm condoning a lot of the mean-spirited reviews of Avatar I've seen around the web and even from my own friends. But MST3K isn't mean spirited....they are just doing it to be funny. They aren't pretending to review it at all, they are just making jokes about it. No one is safe from them, not even the great James Cameron (their Titanic Rifftrax is also very funny).

For example, I am a huge Harry Potter fan (books and movies). I was so opposed to watching the Rifftraxs of it for a long time, but when I did, I loved it. The jokes were so funny and well-timed.

Ma Archaic, if you're a huge Avatar fan and can't bear to see it made fun of, I can also sympathize. It took a lot of coaxing for me to watch those Harry Potter Rifftrax, and I don't know if I could watch the Avatar one (all of the negative criticism it seems to have gotten lately from other online reviewers and in other sources makes me very defensive of it). I respect your opinion, even though I think you should at least cut the MST3K guys some slack and give them some credit...they are very successful and very funny in their own right.

May the odds be ever in your favor.

So I finally got this and watched it, and I was LMAO.  They pretty much avoided all the "easy" stuff.  (No cracks about pony tail sex, pocahontas, or anything like that.)  Lots of current events (As of a year ago anyway) and pop culture references.  You can see a small preview on their website, but it's far better than just that.

Good! Now I'll have to give it a shot :D I was probably going to watch it anyway, but I wasn't really looking forward to watching something that nags about unoriginality by using the same old jokes.

I don't actually have a problem with avatar being made fun of as such. I liked this one for example .....

I just found Rifftrax lame, OK so the skipped the ponytail sex/soup drinker gag's. But still it didn't hit the spot for me, in fact it missed the spot by a mile.
