After the Atokirina' fall down on Jake, Neytiri tells him to come. Shortly afterwards some warriors on horseback appear, and one of them has thrown bolas around Jake's legs and then several point their arrows at Jake. At this point Neytiri addresses the Na'vi warriors and says something like this : "mawey, Na'viya, mawey" I know that "mawey" means "calm" , but does she actually say "Na'viya" and if so, what form is Na'viya? It can't be the plural of Na'vi, but perhaps I am hearing the word incorrectly. If anyone knows what Neytiri says in Na'vi when she addresses the Na'vi warriors in this scene, and the translation, I would be very grateful!

Its has been discussed on the forum, and what i know is that it means "Calm down my people, calm down". From Na`vi + ya. -yä [jæ] (M) genitive suffix (in case of the word ending on a vocal) [allomorph: -ä ]. ► Tompayä kato, tsawkeyä kato ... "The rhythm of rain and sun ...

There has been a lengthy discussion about this on IRC and in some other threads here. If it was Na'viyä, it would mean "The People's calm" or calm belonging to the people which I suppose makes some sense but "My people" would be "Oeyä Na'vi". However, it cannot be Na'via as it doesn't make grammatical sense.

I think this line had actually subtitles in English said "Calm down, People, calm down", that's approximetaly the same answer all the posters here agree on.

Tirea Pa'li

Yeah, we all agree to the translation. I think that the sentence can be explained like that - "people who have calm" = calm belonging to the people = "the people are calm" witch is used whit the right intonation to make it imperative and dropping the command (be calm!) for short.

^Agreed, it sound like something along those lines to me as well.

What I hear is "mawey, Na'viya, mawey"
Subtitles were something like "Calm (down) people, calm (down)" if I remember right

It doesn't sound like "Na'viyä" or "Na'via" - she pronounces definitely a "ya" as in "yard"

But that must be wrong because I found proof in the image below that the correct writing is "Na'viyä" :

That's not the same line though, so what does it show?

That's just using the genitive suffix -yä to create "Na'viyä hapxì" meaning "part of the people".

Not so sure anymore ... maybe nothing ...

... but is there any addition with "-ya" or even "-a"?

A Na'vi contraction, perhaps? "Do not" becomes "don't", etc?

It would be very similar to contractions in Hebrew:

"mine" in English would literally be "shel ani'" in Hebrew ("of me": shel= of; ani= me), but it doesn't exist in that form. Instead, it is contracted to "shli" and becomes "mine".

"my house" is "house shli"

The same thing happens with Hebrew verbs:
"ani holekh" is "I walk" (am walking, etc), but "I walked" is "holakhti".

--you take the "ani", cut of the "-i" at the end, and apply it to the end of the verb.

holekh --> holakhti

It looks like the same thing is being done for the possessive of "People". It may also be word with this unique structure because it is used by the woman who is the princess and will someday be in joint rule over them; they are "her" people in that they are kinda her subjects (although Na'vi society seems much more egalitarian in general, there is still a ruling class).

But that line isn't in the script. I also doubt it is grammatically correct. It is more like a shout.

That line isn't from the '07 script, it appears to be a leaked image from the current one......

2007 is the current (or at least the only one that has been released as official). They don't change the script just because they alter a scene. Some things are added ad hoc because the director sees that it needs to be different. And for bigger or planned changes the actors get a sheet with the updated scene. But the scrip they start with is hardly ever replaced. Even tha Na'vi words were not written into the script but given out on seperate work sheets.

That image wasn't a "leaked" script, it was a shot of Jake's lines from a making of video showing Na'vi pronunciation practice.

Utrayä Mokri

I think it happened one more time again in the movie.

When Jake told Neytiri that he knew everything about what will happen before he became one of the people.
Neytiri said. "Kawkrr! Kawslayu nga Na´viyä hapxi!" - [Never! you will become a part of the people!].. its so okay for now but she repeats the interjections like "Kawkrr! Na´viyä! Kawkrr!"...

So what is the point?

My point is: "Mawey! Na´viyä! Mawey!" and "Kawkrr! Na´viyä! Kawkrr!" are the same.. they are interjections, and we can translate them like:

Mawey! Na´viyä! Mawey!
Calm! (people of the) People! Calm! --> [since she is rocketin' more than one "people of the People". Got the point? ;)]

Kawkrr! Na´viyä! Kawkrr!
Never! (person of the) People! Never! --> [since she is yelling to only Jake]

^Great point, I had never thought about that.

That makes saying certain things a little easier.
