Find our Location: the nerd way!
« on: September 01, 2010, 12:44:31 pm »
Here's an alternative way to find a location. I've made a spread-sheet that uses weights to select countries that fit requirements well.
I'm not sure how well it will work, but it should be a quick way to narrow down possibilities.

That's impressive but I'm not sure it's the best way to do it. Some things like disease are difficult to judge that way: large countries always come out worse (you could use a % pop. I guess), and it's so hard to take into account factors like poverty (one country may suffer heavily from cholera or similar in cities but otherwise disease is minimal).
What I'm trying to say is that although this is fantastic it just computes what we can work out in seconds anyway, I doubt it can be scaled down as we don't have access to such precise data. I don't need a computer to tell me Afghanistan is a bad idea, for example.

What I think we really need is to research immigration laws, that's the most definitive way to narrow our selection. If they won't let us in then that's it. Then pretty quickly we have to start looking at agents and actual property.

I know it sounds stupid but I am becoming increasingly sold on private islands. They can be downright affordable, 600,000 pounds can apparently get you 3,000 acres off the coast of Brazil. I know, disease, but as an example.

Yes, I agree that the first thing we should use to narrow the list down is immigration laws. I support this 110%.

Let's do that now before we talk about something else. Now, any suggestions on how we could get such data?

Easy. Google [insert country here] immigration regulations. They make it easy to find.

Made disease take population into account. I should have thought of that!

That's good but even then I don't think we will be able to fully trust the recommendation.

Ideally we want somewhere with subtropical rainforest, like we have said. Stable climate, food all year, but less prevalent disease. And trees. That's not a huge list of countries, then get checking immigration. It is very possible no where will offer an ideal solution and we need to know that as soon as possible.

As it was mentioned earlier, check this link about tropical (mosquito borne) disease in Queensland : http://www.health.qld.gov.au/goodhealthintnq/topics/mosquito.asp. The gist is that any cases are 'imported' (someone infected brings in a disease), they can be transmitted be local mosquitoes but very rarely. Almost all of these problems are avoided as we would be outside cities/towns. There are a few other extremely rare diseases on the order of one case every 10 years but you get things like that everywhere. Even the rainforests are relatively safe.

The problem though is that most us don't have the necessary natural defenses for many tropical diseases and parasites. So while we won't have to worry about foreign diseases being brought in, there would still be a plethora of diseases waiting for us (transmitted by more bugs than just mosquitos).

Probably not, but I expect there will be problems with things like that at first.

Yeah, the keyword here is "at first". We'll just have to make sure we eat right, get enough rest and take care of ourselves then we'll adapt in time.

Its like the sun and the rain. If you don't expose yourself to the sun or the rain enough, you'll get sunburn easily or you'll get a cold easily. But if you expose yourself more and you recover everytime you get sick, your body will develop a stronger immune system. =)

Stomach problems will be unavoidable. Unless we set up refrigerators on arrival  ;). But there are plentiful treatments and you adapt pretty quickly. I mean you can notice similar affects switching to rain water after a lifetime of chlorinated but it's no big deal.

Also, Tsyal, the point about Australia is that it's the tropical diseases that are foreign. Because of it's long period of isolation there really are few diseases at all, it's not really any different to say the UK. The only difference is that you get rare outbreaks of tropical diseases because there are small populations of the various insect vectors in the north that you don't get in the UK. This wouldn't affect us as we would be outside population centers. In fact the health informations thing (can't recall the name of the service) makes a point of saying that they are not a danger to any rainforest or more isolated tourism.

The point is that many of these horrific diseases and parasites are no where near as prevalent outside South America, it can sound like you are trading starving in winter for dying of malaria and that might be true (ish) in the Amazon but you can get the plentiful resources and ideal climate elsewhere at a much lesser risk.

My first point being that if we can narrow the countries we need to look at manually using something that takes little effort, then we can avoid wasting our time looking at countries that there's no point looking at.
The technology is there, so we might as well use it!

There are at least one nasty disease in every climate, where every we choose to go we should check out every major disease and look at how to combat it and how large the risk is

Like here in Malaysia, there are some places where Aedes Mosquitoes, which are responsible for Dengue Fever, are more active and some places have almost close to none. So I think depending on which part of SA we're looking at, we could get lucky.
