As for the tree houses, I looked into it again and the trees aren't really extreemly tall enough to make a village with. As for the frogs, they live in shrubs on the ground. They have poison on their body, so you must never touch one. To use them, simply trap one and cut off its head and rub the arrow head against its skin. Killing it isn't necessary though. You could actually keep it as a pet to make more poison. Most other insects aren't poisonous. There are also vampire bats that each blood, but they rarely attack humans and go nowhere near light, so fire could keep them away. Everyone would have to stick together though so if a boa managed to wrap itslef around someone, someone would need to cut it off. The amazon is one of the biggest rainforrests and there are not many tribes left. The site I mentioned is no where near any nature preserves. The local tribe is about 5-6 miles south-southeast. Sure there are many dangers, but it is an amazing place. BTW, are skype meetings still going on, beacuse I just got skype, but I have no idea how to use it.

edit: I had an idea. If I made an interactive map program of the world that shows all the information we are interested in, would that help speed things up? I have time right now to start. I have been programming for years and I could make one in like 1 hour once I get all the info on the places. I would use wiki for the info mainly.

You have some very good points concerning safety. And you're right, it is an amazing place to be!
However, our main concern is not just of poisonous animals and snakes, but also of all the medical problems caused by the environment.
For example:
If we wear boots, then the sheer amount of water can cause trenchfoot. (v. bad, all the skin falls off your foot...)
Due to humidity, blisters and cuts will not heal as well (if at all) and are ten times more at risk from infection.
Mosquitoes can, as we all know, spread diseases such as malaria. Tablets may suffice for a while, but what then?
My final point concerns water. You mentioned a nearby waterfall - this is actually a good thing, as any water that is even slightly stationary will have be more full of parasites than a pomegranate is of pips. BUt still beware...

And finally, great idea about the interactive map. Perhaps the first step would be to show the main continents along with pros and cons concerning each. For example:
Europe: High population density
Strict hunting laws in most countries.
          Government/tax laws may be unsuitable.
etc.

And then, once more individual locations are decided, add icons for them along with similar pros, cons, and possibly price.

Sounds like a great idea though!

As for the foot blister thing, I walk barefoot everywhere, so I can wlk on broken glass and not even get a scratch. I can't speak for everyone though. This map I'm going to map should help everyone come to a decision, without even having to read through every post like I did.

I was thinking more along the line of breaking the map into states/provinces/country, Depending on the smallest necesary form for that specific area. I'll get to it after my next class. As for some things I need to research and include in it, I will start a list. Feel free to add. Just as a side note, I only have Windows so I won't be able to test it on other versions. I'll try to keep the code multi-platform so it works for all computers though.
Information:
Location name
Location pictures
Population
Biome
Yearly Average Highs/Lows for Temperature
Yearly Average Hummidity(Rainfall,snow,etc.)
Laws(I may just put an embedded browser or a link hyperlink to law pages because there are a ton of laws out there.)
Animals List(will include animal information as an update after first release)

If anyone has any more ideas of what people will want to know about locations add them. Also if anyone has a recommendation for the map image that I can use as a background would help. There are plenty out there but I need it to be extremely accurate.
Here is the link to some maps I found. If anyone can find a high detailed regional map of the whole world that is connected, please let me know. If I can't find one before I start coding, I will just have the World Map broken into different maps.
http://www.mapcruzin.com/free-world-maps/

edit: i just combined the maps into a extremely high resolution map about 13200 pixels by 10200 pixels. The part that will take the longest is separating each region into clickable parts that will reveal information on them. I hope everyone has good graphics cards because my crappy computer took 1 min to load the combined map.

auroraglacialis

Hi. nice idea with the map. Can we somehow combine this with the location wiki we are trying to set up? Our clan would be very grateful to be able to use your information and you  are of course free to use what little we have scrabled up by now ;) http://revolutionists.aurora-glacialis.de/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
I will just give some advice here and not participate in polls as I am involved with development of a sister clan of this one here which was founded independently. I believe however, we are one clan and we should stick together!

I went survival camping over the weekend with my dad. I haven't done it in a while and it was boring after a while, but I convinced him to go with only his bow and knife. We made a small poorly built covering to live under for the night. We got a deer and were able to survive the weekend. I know it's not long, but I have school again this week. BTW, I am bad at making fire with just sticks. It took me like 2 min. Anyway, I'm officially starting the project. I just bought this computer so I can work a little each day. I think combining it with wiki will be a great idea, but I was planning on making it in C++ so it won't run in the wiki window. There can be a link to a download page though.

P.S. I'm shrinking the image because it was of such high quality when combined that it crashed my computer just trying to view it. It is an 8.6MB .jpg file. I'll decrease the size by 2 and try again. Does anyone on here have a slow processor. I want everyone to be able to use the software when it is done.

update: I just did some of the picture editing done. US took 2-3 hours. At this rate it will be a while before I get to the coding. I'll  do some more each day. I might make it a multi-purpose software just for the topics on this forum. It would make things so much easier. I could even make a chat room in it if anyone wants. Here is my guess for time to completion...
Picture Editing: 24-48 hours
Programming: 2-10 hours
Researching: 2-3 hours

Your map looks like a good way of presenting our research, nice and user friendly. However many of your criteria could be worked out in theory first and would save time if we did, particularly these:
Biome
Yearly Average Highs/Lows for Temperature
Yearly Average Hummidity(Rainfall,snow,etc.)
It would be a better use of time to decide on the ideal biome &c. before researching real locations. It vastly reduces the information we need to collect, with the current method it's more like researching every country in depth when we could easily rule out 50% on biome alone. As I've said before, picking a biome or climate should only take a matter of weeks.

We need a unanimous agreement on how to proceed with researching our location, currently we have multiple threads working in different directions and we're making slow progress. If we're going to be a tribe we should be able to work together on this.

QuoteEven if we did get the plot of land, how would we get all the money together? We're scattered all over the world ( ) so....we can do some fundraisers but not really a big centered one or event of sorts. So anyone have any ideas as to what to do about that?

there are a few ways, we could make a forum and everyone donates towards the cause every month (if your part of a gaming clan then you sorta know what im on about)

or teh oldest member of the tribe sets up a bank account for the tribe and we all cash in cheques for the tribe bank account
yeah that could definately work although, yeah the diff countries could be a prob, but not if the people in the same countries elected some one to start it.. well, ok here is a thought for that. forum, yeah but what about setting up with a bank, an account for that either savings or a stock/mutual fund account, and doing so in such a way that many people could add amounts in to it. like how stockbrokers and similar institutions do for their investors...the tribe itself would not be stock but we could invest in diff things to raise the money for what ever we need to start(i.e. land). a mutualfund/stock option, allows for several people to pool money for it, with the right broker we could actually set something up for everyone in the same global zones..theoretically, but i dont see why it wouldnt work for a group to do it....i mean with how mutualfund investing works..anyone get what im thinking cause my brain just failed.....*facekeyboard*....*mumbles* might be cause its 3:36am

Continuing the main discussion since this thread has be dead -as with most- I have to voice a concern on how everyone is viewing population. Yes, it's a wonderful thought of having around 150 people, but realistically it could be the most horrid experience ever, especially depending on the location.

For one thing, there is the amount of land that would be needed to house and feed everyone. Even if the housing was just enough for sleeping, there would still need a covered space for central gathering, places to store food, places to accommodate guests, places to work with tools and on repair and job projects (since we will most likely still need to generate money),toilet and bathing areas, nursery areas for babies and young, places for solar panels, water storage, and many more places.

Then there is the rationing. If hunting is indeed on the menu, feeding so many people (even if 50 of them are vegan) would be extremely difficult and would not provide much in the way of sustainability -in other words be able to provide for us to the indefinite future. Plus, I don't think we'd be doing nature very proudly hunting off such large amounts of game in a season, let alone a year. Now, if animal farms were raise that would be different and could work for a smaller tribe but would once again cause a sizing problem for the wishful 150 members idea. The same goes for water, deposing such large amount of gray/wash water, giving energy to places, farming vegetables and fruit trees and much, much more.

And my final concern is the ability to keep common vision and peace with so many people. The more people, the more views, and the more views not being honored. This could be our undoing before even the placing gets to us. Now, I'm all for a few smaller clusters of tribes -but of course there would have to be more legal, written documents on how each were to interact with another.

Outside of that, New Zealand sounds good to me =P

(NOTE: I'd also like to say that the 150 people mark was mostly an example to point concern to size. It could easily be replaced with any number 50-60 and above)
"Well... What are you waiting for? Do it."

Predict

I don't think we stand a chance of 150 and I wouldn't worry about it. The real problem will be attaining a high enough population in the first place, I imagine we will have to settle for around 20.

I'm not quite sure where 150 came from, we haven't had the focus on this for quite some time, I don't think population has been discussed for months.

Maweya Hufwe

Fair enough, putting population aside...

Since apparently the 'popular' vote is for sub-tropical regions, I suppose we should get started... Since I'm still very interested (as well as a lot of others according to all the location threads I've started reading here) in New Zealand, I'll be researching that...

What exactly are we aiming for here with location; what's important and why? I guess I'm wondering where we cut the Na'vi-likeness off...
"Well... What are you waiting for? Do it."

Maweya Hufwe

Actually, allow me to back things up a slight bit. Since apparently the idea of subtropical is popular, perhaps we should go this route and break down which types of subtropics we'd want to be at, considering the 'subtropic' can range for close-to-desert to dry-summer like or humid subtropical and so forth. Once we focus on what areas of the subtropics we want, we can see which continents/countries possess that and look into cities, then available land.

Perhaps we can slit up the work? Like, one person looks up the pros and cons of dry-summer subtropical areas (Southern Europe), while one can do monsoon forest areas (India) and so on.
"Well... What are you waiting for? Do it."

Predict

Your right, it's pretty broad. From what I've gathered we want forest vegetation so this narrows it down a lot.

Subtropical does have a lot of advantages. Having ruled out the extremes of climate we are faced with a decision between temperate mild winters and sub tropical climates. Sub tropical have a more forgiving climate but we must be careful to avoid disease. This is a very simplified overview but was the general line of thinking.

Splitting work is a good idea. I can start looking at some of southern Europe tomorrow, I expect.
I don't know how much time I will get.
I was thinking about trying to get the figures we want in numeric form and then write a program to map them onto a chloropleth map. The problem with this is that most figures are in the wrong format, and the program will take some time to write. I can't even guarantee this is possible. Again, I might look into this.

I wouldn't rush to anything yet. Lets outline what we need, I think the first thing to check is immigration laws (we have to get into the country before we can buy land). Do this quickly for each country to get an understanding of the options. What do you think?

I'd also be concerned about southern Europe, it's largely temperate so I'd save it for later.

Also, my news page is up and running on time! with 3 minutes to spare.

Key'ìl Nekxetse

Or today, just scanning the gdp map, I checked Ukraine.
It checks out for GDP, most diseases, parasites and temperate forest.
Sadly, it has the second largest army in Europe. The military is also conscript based. So this is almost certainly not an option.
But here's a new map:
It shows conscription of armed forces.

Thanks.

Ukraine is out then. Europe is very hard because it's so densely and widely populated. There are forests but we would be facing one hard winter, the more agreeable locations are coastal but also inhabited. Although about GDP, if anything a low GDP may be an advantage.

If we can generalize for a moment, diseases aren't an issue in Europe. I would love to find a way to get us into Australia...

Key'ìl Nekxetse

Short of air dropping, I think that is likely to be difficult.
You've been karma'd!

Cheers!
Air dropping might work...

Here check this: http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_031011.shtml Highs around 300C, lows at 20, all year. Humidity pretty steady at 60%. High rainfall but flooding only near the major rivers, very easy to avoid and predictable. If only...

Key'ìl Nekxetse

But it's slap bang in one the areas of disease in Australia! :(
