The place were we purchase the land will undeniably charge some kind of property tax assuming that it is a semi-civilized nation. How will we supplement our income as a city type conglomerate?

I'm aware that supplementing our income was one of the first issues when we were trying to solve all of our dilemmas at once and now that it has quieted down a bit I believe it's time for a serious objective look at what resources will be available to us for income support. Let's face it, money makes the world go 'round and there's nothing we can do to change that as of this moment and the moments to come. I will list plausible possibilities that i have pondered ever since this issue arose in oeyä eltu (which was a great time ago) and will update my post with the best ideas that come from the people, regardless of my take on it as long as two members find it plausible it will be added.

  • Should we try for township status, so all we have to supply is state taxes? I sadly do not know the intricacies of US tax policies and i harbor significantly less knowledge of foreign policies, other than that they are generally extensively higher than the US (discounting southern american countries). Not a full solution but i will help with managing full expenses.

  • Scenario 1:  We could attempt local legislation to make at least the tribe (excluding eco-village) tax exempt. This is what i see as one of the  the most difficult stratagems available for us to attempt.

  • Scenario 2: Assume we have access to someone with a vast amount of land in their possession, enough even to sustain an entire tribal populace. This person has an issue with his land (squaters, too much wildlife, pest issues, etc.) in exchange for free rule over the parts of the land that he selects for us we help control his issue through hunting or even just our presence.
This is similar to what i have been doing when i've gone hunting for many years. A farmer has issue with deer eating his corn so he gladly grants me free roam over his property as he sees that my hunting will at least reduce his corn loss from deer. This strategy is probably one of the best in my mind as i have experience with similar dealings as do many hunters.

  • Scenario 3:We petition special legislation to grant people who wish to live off the land reservation style areas of living, government land given to tribal peoples. A very difficult aproach though if we find a place with ultra liberal government tendancies it could be easier than thought. this scenario is very similar to the first

  • Scenario 4: I'm sure many tribe members have heard of The Principality of Sealand if you haven't, read up. If we could find a virtually uninhabited piece of land that we could occupy and apply for sovereignty that would solve most if not all of problems excluding travel to and from the tribe and medical issues. There are many such islands found in all major oceans a major issue is size and related to that, sustainability.
I believe that quite a while ago a member had suggested an island that was occupied by a small group that would very much welcome, from what i remember, some more genetic diversity as their population is on a fast track towards an inbreeding problem. This group has already created what our eco-village essentially wishes to accomplish. The issues with this island (if someone can kindly remember the post im referring to and post details) were that, when viewed in google earth the island appeared to be largely in primary succession (long description is long ;)). Along with this and most probably as a result of this, wildlife on the island is most likely very lacking. This issue is countered if we become a mainly fishing community, which is how i believe the natives primarily sustain themselves already.

  • Scenario 5: There is a growing interest among the quickly expanding counter culture in ethnobotanicals. Most of these ethnobotanicals grow in similar conditions to those that we wish to live in. Many web sites that sell these pay great fair prices to their growers, bouncing bear botanicals being an example.
Some examples of ethnobotanicals i can think of off the top of my head:
Canavalia Rosea-Commonly known as Bay Bean, probably cultivatable with little maintenance.
Wild Dagga- Not sure of scientific name, not sure of natural environment
I think with little convincing we could get a site to support our initial crop with seeds etc. in exchange for a guarentee that we will deal with them exclusively.
I can see many members having issue with this for many separate reasons but i figured it was worth bringing up just in case as it seems to be a pretty easy way to solve this issue. Keep in mind a lot of ethnobotanicals will grow fine with no cultivation as long as the climate is correct and many could double as our vegetable food supply as the parts that are consumed for ethnobotanical purposes are more often than not separate from the fruit bearing part of the plant.

Im out of ideas as of this moment, mostly because my eyes hurt from straining at the computer screen and my fingers ache from my unbearably slow typing pace. Please move/delete/lock post as necesary :)

I like senarios 2 and 4. They seem the most realistic. Senario 1 has almost been ruled out because the US is no longer part of the discussion (major immigration issues). I don't remember the topic or the idea that was brought up, but if I am correct, there are a few options that might make immigration to SA a tad easier.

Also, we're about to start a dry run. We're pretending we've decided on location and have all the resources we need. Then we're gonna go through all the necessary steps w/o making any real commitments. This should show us a lot of what needs to be done.

I've gotta find this post I'm thinking of, but if I remember it correctly we could be well on our way to solving this problem.

Honestly though, the biggest problem we've faced the past month or two has been generating interest and motivating ourselves. We seem to be past that so now we can really focus.

I do miss those massive conversations we'd have with nearly all the members on at the same time on a nightly basis. As I recall, it was always you and I who were up latest :D

I wouldn't hold much hope on sovereignty, although that would be the best solution. If we were productive and in a more developed country a tax exemption may be possible, in that situation we may be registered as a charity and that would simplify things. I imagine we will have to pay it straight up, large developing countries should have a pretty minimal land tax policy. Even in Australia, as far as I can recall, tax is placed only on services; it's assumed you use them though, I think there is some minimal tax to be paid on land alone. googling.
