Oceania would be really nice but after doing a little research (and still not getting a reply from the NZ government) it wouldnt be the best place. south America could be ok but nowhere north of the equator and tropics (most rainforests appear in equator, deserts and hurricanes on the tropics), parts of Asia could be good and so could Mediterranean Europe ( know a couple of islands that(with a little killing and scaring)could be cleared in about a month *cough, cough**Malta**cough)

In our group we also discussed NZ and it seemed to be a viable option. I'd not give up so soon on this. Of course, buying land the size of a small state is not possible, but I'd guess there might be enough for a project like yours our ours. Just worried about the $$.

Just out of interest - have you considered Costa Rica as a location before?
I will just give some advice here and not participate in polls as I am involved with development of a sister clan of this one here which was founded independently. I believe however, we are one clan and we should stick together!

Hey guys,

I think Indonesia region is the best go,
-its the kind of jungle that we want, even if we have to hack through it, as I imagine the Na'vi would as well.
-As for canibals, we would be a large group of at least 15-20 I would hope, with weapons such as bows and arrows and knives and would hopefully be able to defend ourselves.
-The idea is not that we have a cake walk but to survive, so being somewhere hard to survive in is a good thing (if you look at it that way). I think that we would be eased into the survival, with bought food at first and slowly thin that down over time as we learn the area and the ways of living there.
-As for governments, this is the only major problem with the area and I have nothing to say :P

I have also just been on a camping trip for a week in Alpine Victoria, Aus, (thus why I was innactive) and there are a lot of things I learnt. Most important is water source. Without the use of AquaTabs or purification tablets (which we won't have), most water is not drinkable in lowland areas. However in alpine or mountanous areas the water is pure and can be drunk straight from the river. Thats something else to consider when choosing a place for the tribe.

EDIT: Another thing I learnt is the importance of the knife you carry, a good SHARP knife is definately required for any form of living out in the wild and is another thing to consider. I think there was a forum topic about this? I am not sure but they are definately required, and if we end up in a jungle then axes and machettes would also be needed for survival.

Just some things to think about from the past weeks experiences.

so a good place would be on at least some foothills of a mountainous region...

But indonesia sounds interesting. Are you talking about one of the main land masses or a smaller island?

Don't forget we could still boil the water to help make it drinkable

Ya im sure 15-20 people who just walked out into the jungle would be able to defend our selfes against cannibles who are experts at fighting

Have you looked at indonesian jungle you can't walk any where through it you have to cut through it and it takes masters days just to go a few km

and as I said before it is so hard to survive there that the people who are raised there often die thats why they turned to canibalism so I don't think a bunch of city dwellers (even if we have training) would live for long

How is it pessemistic not to want to die?

I was just reading in a survival guide and it says and I quote "without special equipment an urban dweller would die here (in reference to indoesian jungles)"

Ikranä mokri

aye that's right

but were not just going in with nothing are we! you cant rule something out because of 1 bad thing which can be easily remedied
the remedy is, bring the special equipment, and hire a guide if nesercary, if we own teh land we can do what the hell we want with it !!

there is gonna be an eco-village as well, and they are gonna need some specialist equipment to keep going and to get set up so its all good,

and the pessimist thing was a joke!

In practise just about everywhere is likely to be as dangerous as everywhere else, and more importantly EVERYWHERE is going to require specialist knowledge and most likely special equipment.

I don't think we can rule out Oceania just because of the potential risk of cannibals and the potential difficulty of thick jungles. If we set up in North America there will be a lot of legal and land issues. In British columbia, resources and weather's going to become an issue. In South America mosquitos especially will become a big problem... etc.

Possibly. Without experience anywhere is dangerous and at this stage we shouldn't rule out any type of location or any continent out for certain

People can easily survive out in a forest but they can't in a jungle

Txon Taronyu has a point.
In a deciduous forest, it would take time to die. Starvation and exposure are your biggest threats.
In rainforests/jungles, every second you are alive is a gift. In these types of forest, competition between animals and plants is fierce - and you are a competitor. Insects will sting you, snakes will bite you, plants will give you rashes, and so on.

On retrospect, it would take much longer to establish a tribal community in a jungle. "Learning to see" would be a big part of it - learning how to make the forest accept us.
I will say one thing for jungles - long term survival is a much smaller issue. Medicinal plants, water plants, shelter-providing leaves, edible fruit, it's almost made for us. BUt we have to realise that insects alone make up over a quarter of the world's biomass - we will have neighbours, and they will not be friendly.

"Every living thing that crawls, flies or squats in the mud wants to kill you and eat your eyes for jujubes."

Guides would of course be essential.

Then everything changed ... I fell in love. I fell in love with the - with the forest, with the Omaticaya people... with you...
Don't thank! You don't thank for this! This is sad... VERY sad only!

they do have a point but the most common thing thats gonna kill you in a forest (anywhere really) is disease. I spent 2 weeks camping and the second week i spent 2 days in my sleeping bad with a bad stomach (I had been eating boil in teh bags so it werent the food) I had diarrhoea and was sick, it was one of teh reasons that i decided to go home!

as for the cometition thing, dont piss off snakes, get used to being bitten and stay away from te plants that give you rahses is the rational answer, all that will come with experience ( or we could learn it from a local expert)

Isnt this sorta what we want??

over time you will get used to the bugs everythign is going to take time cause (most of us) are p**** ass westerners who have had a really sheltered existance and please stop using cannibals as an excuse! it is getting really boring hearing that again and again.

Lol well all this made me think...
I think its better to live in a forest, cause we dont move somewhere just to die :P but to survive.

Well, I have something that I want to do, and it's looking harder and harder to tie it in with the tribe.

I want to be a Video Game designer, and I want to use the Eco-Village as a place to set up a studio-ish thing. But that means computers and electronics, running of solar energy, of course. But I would like to have an Oceanic place where I can build a water-proof building-like thing so I don't lose everything in a monsoon. But just to say.

Txon Taronyu

And jungles will be hard to get supplies like medicin since most towns there do not have hosptials
