Hi again everyone,

Been having a look round, and if immigration really is easier than we thought, then land in North America would give us the greatest number of potential sites for the lowest price. Most land of the ideal size is also hunting land anyway, so there would be instant reliable supplies for us when we arrive.

But, have been talking to a couple of travelling magicians recently, and they say American immigration is an absolute nightmare. They say that your only hope is to hire a visa agency to help you out. I suppose that money we would save in the location would have to be spent in this department...
Australia, despite incomprehensible government visa websites, is apparently much easier - but only for UK citizens. Ahem...could be a little biased.

The main point of this topic is this - how would we all feel about taking up land in the US? Ideally, land down south - which may mean buying from cattle ranches or purchasing ranch land. I have been looking for forests, but most of these are artificial pine now (for those who don't know: Pine forests are one of the least diverse habitats in existence. Very few animals/plants can survive in them, as the pine trees grow fast and close together.
So? America or not? This is just so I can check before I request more info on flora/fauna from the land agents.

I'd like to make a note here:  Pine trees are actually an excellent food source.  Pine nuts were one of the staples of Native American diets in the areas where they were plentiful.  I understand that the lower numbers of other types of plants and animals will be something to consider, but pine trees are actually a good thing.  :)

I'm trying to do a little research and find recipes involving pine nuts.  I know they can be made into bread, but I'm not sure how.

I have seen this recipe http://whatscookingamerica.net/CynthiaPineda/PinonCakes/PinonCakes.htm cropping up here and there.  It would require things purchased from outside the tribe, but things like flour and powdered milk have a long shelf life and can be purchased in bulk for future use.  :)  You'd just need to find a way of storing it.

The bark of some pine trees is also edible, and the needles have been frequently used used to make a tea rich in vitamins A and C. But I don't think we want to live in a conifer forest, I've been in a couple, and the non-natural ones are extremely depressing.
Also, it sounds like the south of America tends to be a very bad place to be unusual, but I hope someone who knows something about it can say otherwise.

Heh, edited first post to rectify my pine tree rant. Looks like I need to research more before posting!

Wasn't there talk of Hawaiian reserves a while ago?

Iirc I brought up a piece of land a while ago that was a pine forest, and one of the concerns was the ability to walk barefoot in such a forest, which a lot of members want to be able to do. Plus, personally, I'm allergic to pine.

Yes, and work is being done on finding out the plan/animal populations of those areas. The only downside is the fact that Hawaiian land is often only available in smaller sizes, and for much higher prices. The other american land was intended to be a kind of back-up location, should hawaii become a problem.

I personally would fully support it due mainly to the fact that we really won't have to worry about disease nearly as much.
