Don't give me a knife. I perfer to use a bow and then a carved peice of wood.

you might want one for field dressing your kill... the sooner the organs, which deteriorate rapidly, are removed, the faster the meat will cool. Field dressing also eliminates dragging unnecessary weight when moving the animal.

How quickly the animal is field dressed and the meat property cooled determines the quality of the meat.

well i would suggest (im no expert) that a modern knife would be more useful than a rock or bone one we make ourselves (though that would rule)

the knife would be more durable and would take a heel of allot more punishment and probably work better

Yeah but when you don't have one for whatever reason, it's always nice to know how to make what you need.

definatly more durable but how do you plan on creating more would be the issue, either you start forging metal, quarrying for materials(not exactly the best on the land either) or you look to natural alternatives.

I could see for starting out metal would be better  but as the years pass tools will fail, corrode leaving a need to either purchase more or create with whats available

Whenever I think of a bone knife, I think of Monster Hunter. Now I want to make a great sword.

What you are forgetting is that there will still be contact with the outside world- I know that I will definitely be able to gank supplies every time I come back (Though depending on where the Tribe is, I might be able to stay permanently ^_^). My point is, if we need more knives, then it would be a simple matter to get a hold of them every once in a while when they would be needed ^_^

I said don't give me a knife because I have a very bad history with knifes and I don't want to poke my eye out.

Yeah, I'd probably take some of y dad's collection of knives with us. He has an extensive collection of SOG knives along with a few machetes and hatchets and a fireman's ax.

I'd definitely want steel knives around. The issue about what to do once the knife is gone will occur no matter what, if you're gonna make flint knives you'd need to find flint first, which usually means walking to the nearest seashore or start digging into a limestone hill. Either way, lots of unnecessary effort. What we could do though is to get knife blades (like this one http://www.slojd-detaljer.se/Assets/ProductImages/Medium/3616/3616_01.jpg) and axe heads, and then fashion handles and sheaths ourselves. It's cheaper and there's more room for personal design. All you need is leather, wood or horn and some tar glue.

I have two hunting knives at the moment. Really interested in making both a flint and a bone knife at some point.

I like hunting knives so maybe i could try and buy one or two.

The thing is, when a knife gets broken on the land, then we will need to find a way to make a new one. Perhaps taking ones we have from home is not the best option since it is short term and may not be adapted in everyday use, walk, running and all this.

We should take at least one good fixed blade steel knife per person. So that might be anywhere from 5-20. Airport security will probably wonder about that hrh  ;D
Everyone should also know how to make a knife with flintknapping.
