In the Tribe Progress thread it was mentioned that the design for the knife was still in question. I'd like to suggest an inexpensive, VERY durable solution -- Cold Steel brand machete. They come in various designs, are constructed from 1060 Carbon steel, and have good heft and feel. I bought mine (Cold Steel 12" Barong Machete) off EBay for about $15 and it's become my new trail knife.

I'd be happy to get pics together if anyone wants to see what they look like beyond the ebay pictures.

ps. If anyone IS interested, I'd suggest getting them soon as many of the machete designs have been discontinued for a lighter Latin Machete design.

Ikranä mokri

but wouldn't a more usable knife be more useful like a predator I military knife.

machete are good for hacking but a knife has to able to do more than that if its going to be totally useful. they would be good for cleaing the area but for skinning animals and even killing them its better to use a knife like the Predator (dont have one but im planning on trying to find one like my m8 has got)

Link or pics? I've never heard of the knife you're suggesting.

I did a quick search on Google for "Predator 1 Military Knives" and got this:

I'm not sure if this is what Twonyu Ikranä was talking about, though.

If your looking at bringing current knife technology with you, i would recomend staying away from folding knives.  These recommendations are strictly based upon my experience with these knives, either my own or my friends knives over the years camping, backpacking, etc.

Stainless steel might be a better option for your knife, not knowing how often you will be able to oil / treat it

also for survival knives i would recommend around a 6-7 inch blade they seem to be able to serve a better range of uses.

Machete

depending on what you wanted the knife for a i would recommend a ka-bar kukri or a Ontario govt. issue style machete or condor machete for clearing, brush  the kukri being the better chopper for heavier stuff out of the machete category.

Hatchets

also hatchets are a good alternative, cold steel makes some nice smaller hatchets, ex: cold steel trail hawk, vietnam tomahawk

Survival Knives
and pairing that with a good survival/hunting knife

good survival knifes are; ontario rat 7, falkniven A1, becker bk7, ka-bar usmc knife, sog seal pup, cold steel recon scout

A hunting / skinning knife would also be recommended as most survival knives are a little large for this but can be used if nothing else available.  There are many inexpensive brands of these as they aren't as "hard use" as a survival blade.

check gerber,ka-bar,buck,victorinox

Sharpening / Maintenance
Also you might want to think if you want to bring wet stones, steels with you until you can find a natural alternative to sharpening your gear.

i like a easy to carry sharpener for my machete called the lansky puck, easy to hold in one hand and has a coarse and finish side also great for field sharpening.

and any good nice sized wet stone or tri hone system would be good for back at the village

Also knives need to be oiled to prevent rust, this can be attained through natural oils also.

I'm definitely bringing my throwing axe.

And I'm going to look into bone knives, or some other material.

Perhaps we can set up a forge ^_^.

The knife that has proven the most useful to me over the years is http://www.leatherman.com/products/product.asp?id=1&f=6&c=1.  While I can definitely understand the hesitance for the long term use of a folding knife (especially all the heavy duty work), as a utilitarian knife, this has been the ticket for me.  Also, it's fun to whittle with.  :3

EDIT: Well, maybe it isn't a machete per se, but it has a knife attachment!  Haha.

A very easy and effective field sharpener can be crafted from a piece of sandstone, quartz, or granite smoothed out by rubbing two of the same together to make a flat edge for sharpening.

I do, but regardless the cooks and gatherers will need the knives, not so much the hunter, but if you run our of arrows and you have a mad bear running at you, a knife or a spear might be the question of death.
