From the posts I've read about those of you considering doing this as a permanent life's change, I submit for your consideration:
http://www.simondale.net/house/
It has the desired low impact, plus is awfully reminiscent of a Navajo hogan.
Thoughts?

Maybe the design of the house itself isn't usefull for us, but there are other things on this site than can be helpfull.
Like in his explanation how he build it, he talks a lot about things you have to take into considderation when building a permanent residence. A design we can create ourselves no problem, i'm sure there are a lot of artistic people here.
But it's the background knowledge that we need.

I cant help but think some day a loud knock at my door a tall old wizard and bunch of dwarfs will come busting in on me. Is nice looking though.

My first thought was looking at the house of Bilbo Baggins, the hobbit from Lord Of The Rings.

I guess the hobbits were really onto something, weren't they?  :D

I was also familiar with this the low-impact home and I have very much liked the idea of it. (How could I resist a hobbit home!?  ;D) I also remember underground homes being mentioned as a possible idea as well. Perhaps a mixture of the two? I'm all for Earth being part of our roofs for the possibility of having more space to grow food. I find these ideas to be a bit more practical for security, privacy, and protection from the elements when mother nature wants to bare her fangs. These would have better defenses against extreme temperatures, strong storms, and parasites than, say, huts.

Yea, gotta say that I love the idea ^_^ I can see a lot of benefits that could be gained from living in a home like this ^_^ And this way, the ideas of an Eco-Village and a Tribe both can be preserved ^__^ I think that we should show this to more people!

You could also grow a small to modest batch of crops on the roof.
Not sure if it would be a detriment to stability, though.

This made me squeak with happiness! Ah, with a lot of imagination and altering, we could make our own little Lothlórien. Oh dear, I do suppose my Tolkien fandom is leaking out a bit too frequently lately. Haha  ;D

There is actually a man near where I live that built his house and then covered it with a mini mountain. You cant hardly tell it's a house except for the antennae that are sticking out of it as well as a smokestack or two. But he seems to enjoy living there.
