The way I see things, the only reason that much of what we currently have is damaging is largely because of over population. If Earth only had as many people as Pandora, an H2 wouldn't be an issue.

Yeah big numbers can make a difference. And if we decide to go super tribal and say no vehicles then we wouldn't be taking all that much away from the car pool. (Pun intended)

Seriously no matter what vehicle we go with 1000 more of them will be bought and added to the roads like each day and china will still keep building coal fire power plants. se we will not really be doing that HUGE and impact on the environment, however the whatever it is should nt be used to hoon around the bush in, that would really kill the local environment around the tribe.

I vote Bowler Wildcat!  ;D ;D

A Chinook, big, quite unreliable(ish) at times, very noisy but spacious and you could probably buy and old one cheap off the British army seeing as we have just bought 22 new ones for service out in Afghanistan.

but other than that i vote no vehicles (apart from maybe a quad-bike 4X4, 2 cylinder engine (hang on im building one of those))

Isn't a chinook just something like 300 000 parts flying in close formation??

I personally don't think one would be a good idea, they are big and extremely complex...

are we talking about the boeing Chinook or the CH-47??

and why not get a CH-46 Sea Knight, its a little smaller than a chinook but basically the same thing

A CH-47 is a Chinook, made by Boeing/VERTOL.

A Chinook is overkill. It is also too expensive. A CH-53 would be the largest thing we need, really, and even that is nutso. Actually, I believe the helicopter with the best lift-to-weight ratio is Hughes 500 series, which is a small and economic platform.

And in truth, a small, rugged fixed-wing bush plane would be easier and more economic, and less of a maintenance hog. Something that can take off from an ordinary smooth field or flat pasture is the most that is needed. Or, if the tribe is located near a lake, a floatplane.

I you already have a UH-1, then problem solved. If anyone insists on a different helo, tell them to pony up the cash. Remind them they only need one kidney.

As for the Hummer, it is a bad idea for many reasons-- one of which is the public relations image of a Na'vi tribe, but also because the Hummer brand name has been shut down. Parts will become more scarce and expensive.

Plus, the later-model Hummers were more "soccer-mom" SUVs designed for comfort and safety more so then true, hard-core off-road machines like the original H1 and the military HumVee.

Now, if we could get actual military surplus HumVees, and a steady supply of parts, that would be good. Otherwise, any vehicles needed might be best represented by motorcycles and ATVs.

Why not horses?

If we are going for a 4x4 of some sort, how about a Toyota Landcruiser (one of the slightly older models), not even Top Gear managed to kill theirs!

I think a helicopter would work better than a bush plane. They can carry more people and supplies and can take off/land in more confined spaces. And they can land directly at a hospital in a medical emergency rather than having to go through an airport.

As for ground vehicles I think a few motorcycles or dirt-bikes would be preferable for through-the-woods travel because they don't need roads, as well as a few quad-bikes (4 wheelers) for carrying small loads in trailers or on the racks. On the emergency medical front, a quad can pull a stretcher trailer out to the tribe and then back to the eco village for medivac. Sort of like the ski-patrols on their snowmobiles at mountain resorts.
