Mmkay, so I've been reading a lot of the threads on here about how all of you are trying to start a Real Life Na'vi tribe, and before I go any further I want to say that I completely support your movement. But I think y'all need a bit of reality. So I've found an account from someone who actually spent 3 years living in the woods. Unfortunately, I contacted the author and he said that he didn't want his name published with his article because he's now in a position where he can't help people who want to live like he did, and he's trying to disconnect himself from that part of his past (he lived in the woods in the '90s. He now has a wife and 2 kids and teaches at a college.) But regardless, it's still a very thorough account of what it's like to live in the woods. He didn't write a guidebook, he wrote about the human experience of living in the woods.
So here it is (in spoilers 'cause it's huge)::

Well, I am going to need some time to read this, but thank you for posting it! Once I finish it, I will tell you what I think.

Wow, this looks really good, unfortunately it is 1AM here and I have to write an essay now so I only skimmed a bit, I will take a more concentrated look at this tomorrow. Thanks for the info and contacting the author etc. I am sure this will be useful. In our defense I suggest you read the Devils advocate and all the bad stuff thread. I think we have a fair sense of reality though this will undoubtedly help in giving us a better insight. Irayo ma 'eylan :) Karma!!!

Amazing. So far, I have only read through a part of this thread but, I will continue to, and look forward to it.

at least this is a exact account of what it was like to live tribal. I can only imagine what it must have really been like (writing only purveys so much). I know from my own experience (although not for very long, and being very close to civilisation) that it is very difficult.

I just finished reading the whole thing and it was great! He made a lot of good points.

Example: He said that the transition from living now to 100% primitive is just that, a transition. Many people that want to be in this tribe hope to just jump into the primitive lifestyle without doing much else.

Quotesome people are making such a big deal about the eco-village and about having internet and medicine with us. It's not like once we go into the woods we'll never be coming back out!

im sorry to say contradict you (because i agree that most of it isnt needed (although medicine would be a good idea)) but this isnt something that most people can easily do.

If you have been brought up in a city all your life and have never been camping then your (im not saying you personally, its just an example) most likely to be over enthusiastic on here to start with, thinking that we can replicate the life of the Na'Vi with relative ease, but, when you realise that it isnt the case you start to think about life luxuries. most of us have never known life without the internet or without a tv, or without a warm bed and a roof over our heads with on demand heat and light.

Like you said, its a transition, people may live in the eco village and then over time some may come to join the tribe.

but you cannot say that the eco village is a bad idea, its a huge psychological, physical leap to go from a totally soft life with everything you need to survive to a hard life where your body is tested, your dirty all the time.

Still haven't read the whole thing yet as I was busy last night, but I certainly don't intend to come back from the forest. This is a permanent lifestyle choice for me although I know that not everyone plans on staying forever ^^

Honestly i believe that we should let the natives live the tribal lives and us civilians should live the civil life. but honestly,..... i have a erge in my heart to go out there as well. i mean, i always loved challenging myself. and i am also good with cooking and also i have great stamina. i had a forest in the house i lived in before this one ( i mean a real forest), you probably wont believe me, but when my family was gone or when i was alloud to go in the forest, i would run non-stop through the forest. when i did that, i always ended up getting lost. but i loved the feeling of being lost. i loved being surrounded by nature, and most of all, it felt good to try to find my way back, trusting my instincts. it was such a rush to get lost in that forest, it was like a drug to me. but then i moved to the city. :( who knows. i am only a teen but when i grow up, i might consider joining the tribe. :)
Wish me luck on my journy of learning how to speak Na'vi. :)

What you said is lovely and all, but you can say the same thing in any of the other random tribe threads where all people do is talk about how much they want to do it, but they never talk about what they're actually doing to set their plans in motion.

Would you do me a favour? Read every single thread and then tell me that we don't do much to set our plans in motion. At this point in time, most of the active permanent members are either in the middle of exams or are preparing for them, so most of us do not have much time to be researching and looking into what needs to be done right now. As much as this sucks, we have real lives that at the moment, for most of us are very busy. As an example, the exams I am currently preparing for (two weeks from now is the start) are the results I need to get into University and hence I don't have the luxury if time at the moment. If you would go through the threads on this board I am sure that you would see that we have done quite a lot. Irayo ulte Eywa ngahu.

Uhhhhhh.... Off topic much? If you maybe could have read the article and related what you said back to the article, than that would have been better. What you said is lovely and all, but you can say the same thing in any of the other random tribe threads where all people do is talk about how much they want to do it, but they never talk about what they're actually doing to set their plans in motion.

And strike two: making a distinction between "natives" and "civilians." I'm not sure if anyone's told you this, but we're all humans. And all humans used to live the way the "natives" do now. The "civil life" is far from "civil," what with the greed, cheating, and people killing each other because someone looked at you wrong. Ah yes, we should be so proud that we're more "civilized" than those "natives." *facepalm*
sorry. i didnt mean to get off-topic. and please also forgive me for making a distinction between natives and civilians, true, we are both humans. i hope you can forgive me. i actualy am getting interested in this tribe. i might consider it. once again, sorry. hopefully you can forgive me. Irayo

I take your point, we have been getting a lot of off-topic comments recently however, I have seen one of the other forums and their tribe idea and (without meaning to seem arrogant) I think that ours does seem to be the most progressed and well organized of them. We all get annoyed sometimes and I hope you will forgive our ocasionaly off-topic comment but you get used to each other after so many months and it can detriorate into almost a friendly chat far too easily. We do our best to stay on topic for the most part and any major detrailing is deal with. Irayo for taking the time to post here, irayo ulte Eywa ngahu

I know you have done a lot, and practically, I don't have time to read all the threads in this sub-forum because I'm also getting ready for exams. And I know that this project will take years just to get off the ground, so the progress you've made in 5 months is astounding. But this is the third site I've been to where people are saying that they want to start a "real life Na'vi tribe" and then it turns out that the members are all 13 year-olds who have no idea what they would be getting themselves into. So forgive me for directing my frustrations at this forum. After looking through this sub-forum, it's pretty clear that you're all serious.
But I find it irritating that there are so many other threads about role-play type subjects. I know the people there aren't actually discussing role-playing, but when they're talking about tribe musicians/dancers/storytellers, tribe clothing, and shamans, it's almost impossible to take them seriously. This is such a huge project and I think it's a waste of time to talk about irrelevant subjects like those. I know people don't want to talk about serious stuff all the time, but it's really annoying when I'm reading through an intelligent thread that's actually sorting issues out and then all of a sudden it gets derailed by someone saying how they want to be a shaman. *headdesk*

I hope you can likewise forgive me. My response to you was completely uncalled for and I apologize for my rudeness. I was in the sort of mood yesterday where I was just looking for a fight from anyone. My points still stand, but I regret writing them so rudely.

all forgiven brother. :) were cool now, right?
