i worked as a machinist for 2 years and had a friend who was into blacksmithing and knife making there are some good books out there, i think it was the first one i read that suggested using old files or saw blades since it is hardened steel to practice with. 

also if you want to get into bow making there are some native american bow crafting books out there some are wood some are wood and laminate
