???
well it's a little confusing, what you really wanna name AVATAR's Hallelujah
Mountains on planet Earth ...
On the German wikipedia site, they only mention the Huang-Shan ...
On the Chinese site, there is just Zhangjiajie's Wulingyuan ...
On the English wikipedia they say: "According to production designer Dylan Cole,
the fictional floating rocks were inspired by Mount Huang (also known as Huangshan),
Guilin, Zhangjiajie, among others around the world."

But as you may see in my attachment, the places are quite far away ...
(Zhangjiajie-Huangshan ~ 500 miles / 800 km)

So it seems, you have to decide, where to go ... (or go to all the places?)

In my eyes, Zhangjiajie comes more close to the cliffy mountains in
the movie than the other places ...

For your economy, it's better you travel with a group, that will make it cheaper.
.. or some insider information ;)

English wiki:
One of the park's quartz-sandstone pillars, the 3,544-foot (1,080 m) Southern Sky Column, had been officially renamed "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain" (阿凡达-哈利路亚山, pinyin: Āfándá hālìlùyà shān) in honor of the eponymous film in January 2010.

I think you were watching on something wrong. If you only search after Zhangjiajie in Wiki, you get up the city Zhangjiajie, near the area where the park is located.

No, I don't think so ...
I searched on the Wikis for "AVATAR movie" not for the places ;)

Maybe You read above : I WAS in Wulingyuan in May 2012, and I did see the big boards with
the pictures of the movie (but didn't thought it is worth to take a photo of them ...)
They are in the tunnel, where you come across if you wanna go up the mountains
with an expensive elevator ...

Tunnel:

Elevator:

(This construction looks quite displaced here ..) ???

The distance Zhangjiajie - Wulingyuan is only "a few minutes" by bus ...
Wulingyuan - Huangshan needs hours to go (by train) !!
(so I didn't really cared for that difference Zhangjiajie or Wulingyuan ...)

btw: I went to Zhangjiajie 'cause before I thought, Camerons crew only
get inspired by that place ... afterwards I just noticed (disappointed), it
seens not very clear that it is the only place of their inspirations ...

But a fact is, that you don't find any grey rocks (unobtainium) at any
place, because sandstone is yellow :D

About maybe $30 pr night on a hotel, for example this hotel
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g494933-d1411483-Reviews-Jinjiang_Inn_Zhangjiajie-Zhangjiajie_Hunan.html

So funny !!!  :D

Today I just realised, that this was exact the hotel where I planed to stay ... 'cause I
have a member card of that hotel chain from a former trip to China ...
But a chinese friend recommended to stay in the youth hostel inside the forrest park
http://www.hihostels.com/dba/hostels-Yuanjiajie---Zhongtian-International-Youth-Hostel--Forest-Park--024703.en.htm
If you are happy with simple chinese food, that would be a good choice, cause you
don't have to travel the 30-35km from Zhangjiajie city to the forrest park each day,
you wanna go there ...

Well, they may not speak English in the youth hostel, but there were allways other
chinese students/guests in the hostel who spoke English, and helped the few foreigners ... ;)
(I also needed some help, 'cause my chinese isn't the very best ...)
