As much as the idea of this tribe sounds good and has promise (believe me, I'd love to see this go ahead and give it a wholehearted shot)...

...How many of you can realistically say you'd leave EVERYTHING behind?

Obviously I am talking predominately about Technology and Medicine, but for those of you who have certain hobbies that you just couldn't live without... How would we deal with the lack of such things? Sorry, I'm not trying to troll or anything, it's just that I had a lengthy conversation to a friend about this and he raised some good points.

I have to say that in my imaginings of this camp, I can't see us living without some form of technologies. We would need medicine, radio's/SAT Phones, internet (satelite) in order to maintain some connection to the outside world and to maintain this website everyone is planning on. Also for communications when an emergency arises such as someone gets pwned by a bear and needs medivac.

As for hobbies, well yes I think there will deffinately be some things that I miss, and I can guaruntee a few people will turn up and then leave after a few weeks.

Yeah, I say we branch off from the "movie" Na'vi so to speak.

Whether we like it or not, the world lives in a technological state and we can eliminate all of it. But the most basic and essential parts we really need to keep for ... well ... survival.

Things like TV, Computer, Game Consoles can be ditched, but Phones and Medicine can't.

The trickiest part is the Internet. Ideally you could cut it out, Phones help with communication. But to have a website up requires maintenance and monitoring.

So far, I believe we have had this discussion in Tribe discussion or one of these other threads. It was a multi page argument and it turned out to be something like. Big TV for Avatar Movie Night. (Every night) A comp for contact to the outside world and to this site to keep recruiting. A phone and at least sokme form of vehicular travel for emergencies.

Got a link? This forum is a little unorganized (locked stickies without redirects to the continuations?)

...I dunno about the big TV, sound great, don't get me wrong, but it just depends on how far you want to branch off.
One computer would be good, but you'd need to work out how to keep it for use only as "necessary" and not abused.
More than 1 phone would be recommended, especially if certain groups go out hunting.
And as for a vehicle, anyone got a Toyota Hilux? :)

But yeah, got a link to the conversation?

Leaving everything behind. No, it wouldn't be easy, but I doubt it would be like going to a summer camp and getting homesick. We aren't some rag-tag group of kids whose parents decided it would be fun for us to go to an art camp, and we were all for it till we got there. And we're not a group who have almost nothing in common: we're formulating this because we have many things in common. The mere fact that we would even consider going along with this without any true gain from it shows that we can see this through if we so chose to. We're a group who say and believe we are committed to making this work, and that's enough for me to want to see it through.

But this is just the ranting of a sleep-deprived teenager who stayed up far to late on a night with work in the early morning.  :D

I'll try and find the link. It has been a while since I last saw it.

I know what he is saying, and I am sure that it is in the permanent Tribe discussion thread somewhere. I am in agreement, though, that it would be extremely hard for people to give up almost everything to join the Tribe, and I wouldn't require it, if it were me. I personally love science to give it all up, even for this, and would probably not be able to be there every day during the year (I want to be a professor ^_^) but I would be there as often as possible.

Just my opinion.

I most defenatlly agree with Uriuujìn about the giving up everything to live in a tribe. i would die to do this stuff(cant cause im only 15 and my mother wouldnt let me do it)but iv been playing video games since i was 6( 9 years people!) i dont think i could give that hobby up easily, but if i was relly devoteed (which i am) i could giv it up.

It would be hard, but id get use to it.

I don't think we should have video games (no offence) we should only have technologys that we really need such as a radio, computer, medicine and other stuff that we really need

Also for you people who are woried about giving up non esental tec you will get used to it in a week or two like at a summer camp with out that stuff

We were never planning on having video games.

Like bagget00 said before, we were planning to have something along the lines of:

One computer with satellite internet, to connect with the world.

An extensive medical kit, just in case.

Some sort of vehicle if we need to take someone to the hospital or something.

I understand  :D

I was saying that to duma

Well, the only thing I'd have trouble giving up would be computer. Hot showers could be on that list as well, but it's not as bad as compy.

Everything else I can ditch.

I mean, I'm pretty much the only person at my school who doesn't have TV. My dad disconnected it a while ago, so now we have a useless satellite dish on our roof. :P
So that's not an issue.

I don't have a cell phone, iPod, or any other mobile device, so that wouldn't be an issue.

Telephones in general? Bah, people got along just fine writing letters for thousands of years.

Friends? Hmm, I suppose I would miss them a bit, but they're so plugged in it's amazing, and we don't "talk" much.

I agree with that but we need a few things just for emergancys and as for showers most likely we will be somewhere warm so the water wont be cold anyway

No I camp a lot but if we are in the jungle it would be warm and even if its not we can warm it over a fire

Water does not absorb heat that well, so in order for a river to be warm, it would have to literally be somewhere in the middle of a rain forest. If we camp somewhere near mountains, the water's always going to be freezing.

And why bother? It's too much work to heat the water so that over 30 people can bathe.

How about no baths at all?Sorry if this is a bad idea but to be honest I this all the little parisites that trying to bath would do would always get there in the end and trying to keep clean would be a waste of time.Just thinking.

Just bathe in the freezing river. People of old did it and we can do it again.
