Hey Guys,

I want to try to make a bow to start "practising" for the tribe, as despite our EXTREMELY strict weapon rules in Australia, it is perfectly fine to own and shoot a bow in your own backyard.

I've been reading guides and what not about Yew, Oak, Ash, etc. and was wondering if these trees even exist in Australia and if so, where do I find them? The most accessible place to me is South Gippsland in Victoria, lots of trees, but I have no idea what type.

Any Australians know which trees we have down here and which are the best for constructing a bow?

Beach/swamp/river oaks could be a good choice. Are you going to do this bow with a sapling or a whole tree?

look for leaves like these:

Thanks for the image, I'll keep an eye out.

As for how I'm doing it, I would have just said sapling as that's what I've read... Why, is there an alternative? What's the difference?

you could build it from lumber it's just harder and requires a lot more shaping and tools. and it's a lot more unatural. i would stay with the sapling idea, yeah. keep me posted on your progress i'd like to know how it's going. ;D

I want to try and keep it a natural as possible.

The next time I'm down in the country at one of my family's farms, I will go for a walk around and see if I can track down a good tree to hack at :)

If you don't already know (I'm sure it states it in the guide your using) you want a sapling about 2 inches in diameter and you want to cut it so that is about nose height. i suggest that you heavily abide by the 2 inches rule because anything bigger will usually have a lot of knots and irregularities under the bark. And after some research i think i've found that almost any tree you are going to see in Australia is going to be hard wood (especially eucalyptus) and if it isn't it will be obvious that it is too soft i.e. balsa.
