Kaltxí, ma oeyä aytsmukan sí aytsmuké.

So I've been thinking a lot on what we would do to become Na'vi.  This is my extreme thoughts and considerations regarding total Na'vi conversion.  I, myself, may or may not do these, but I really probably might just for giggles.  The first part I will address diet, the second part will address physical fitness, the third part will deal with looks (theory and application), and the fourth part will deal with mentality.  If I think of anything else to talk about, I'll add it later.  Parts will be added as edits to the original post.  Irayo in advance for taking the time to read this lengthy post.

Part 1

Diet:
Long ago, mankind reached the evolutionary point where we became who we are.  Really the only thing that has changed since then is how we govern ourselves.  We use to live off of instincts as survival, but to control the masses you have to control their instincts and their desires.  Children start off romantically, but eventually society hammers them into line and that drive fades.  What would be considered a true warrior ended a long time ago, and there are so few today (if really any).  There was, of course, a good reason for this control.  Natural instincts can be dangerous, and allowing people to do whatever they felt like could harm others.

A thousand years ago these kinds of warriors were common.  Entire towns were made of these warriors.  Early Greeks and Romans were built lean and hard.  Men in the 5 foot range were able to fight against 6 foot monsters in the Gauls.  They ate legumes, seasonal fruits and vegetables, and at night filled themselves up with warm meats and fermented grains after the battles and work was done for the day.  When they woke up they ate sparingly and toiled.  You can see this in ancient pottery and ancient art.  If you head further south to places like Egypt, you begin to see more feminine portrayals.  They mostly ate off of refined grains and in predetermined times. As decadence set into Rome and Greece, they began to look more like modern man does today.  Until Nero there was no obese Emperor.

So what does that mean for us, Na'vi?  We must remember we are predators, and return to the natural life cycle that all predators live off of.  We are not heard animals, we do not graze and constantly eat.  We do what we must during the day, eat sparingly because we cannot carry so much food on the hunt, and then after we are done with the day's work, we go home to eat.  We are Na'vi, and as Na'vi we carry very little food with us for the hunt.  We compensate this lack of food after we "bring home the bacon."

The point is to reintroduce our instincts back into our lives.  Look at a lion.  Out in the plains he hunts and kills (realistically it's the female lions I believe).  Then he eats until he is full and walks away.  The other prey know he's peaceful, for now, because lions don't eat unless hungry.  Then they sit, sleep, and enjoy the sun.  Put a lion into captivity and they eventually begin to just eat and eat and eat.  Which will lead to sickness eventually.  Many zoo animals are starting to exhibit diseases modern man suffer's from.  This is oddly mirrored in man in two ways, I think.

1.  We feel like caged predators.  We want something, we want adventure, we want to run, we want to hunt, we want freedom.
2.  We've lost our instincts due to heard like mentality.  Predetermined feedings, no "hunting," controlled lifestyle.

So what is this predator's cycle I want to follow?  Under eating (controlled fasting) during the day, and Over eating (compensation) at night.  The Under eating phase should not last more that 16-18 hours as the natural resources of my body will begin to consume the lean muscle to feed my brain and other organs.  The controlled fast keeps the metabolism high, and should only be done during waking hours.  During this time your body is using the energy stored up to make you creative, more ambitious, and to "go for the hunt."  This is also the time when your sympathetic nervous system, the system that controls fight or flight, is dominant.

At night when you sleep the parasympathetic system is dominant, the system in charge of digesting and elimination of waste.  Your body will serve you better if you eat like you were a predator, but not a scavenger.  Predators eat when hungry.  Scavengers eat when they can.  Predators eat when comfortable and relaxed (i.e. safe).  Scavengers eat fast and in a hurry.  Predators eat warm live food.  Scavengers usually eat cold and old food.

When you fast insulin drops and the hormone glucagon increases, to ensure a steady supply of energy to the body.  When glucagon dominates, most of the body's energy is derived from glycogen reserves and fat stores.  Also the drop in insulin allows the growth hormone (GH) to peak.  Elevation of GH helps the body to rejuvenate, repair tissues, and burn fat.  Unfortunately GH is deactivated under acidic environments.  People tend to suffer from over acidity by over consumption or acid forming foods, lack of digestive enzymes, or even mental and/or physical stress.

Controlled fasting helps in that your system is alkalized through the consumption of raw fruits and vegetables and their fresh juices.  Fast, but don't starve.  You shouldn't be afraid of hunger.  That just means you're alive.  But being hungry to the point of weakness and pain is called starvation.  Eat light, just enough to take the edge off the hunger.  Eat the fruits and vegetables and juice in the fasting part.  The glucagon taking over from insulin will keep you energized, and get rid of fat.  Which is good.  Also, don't forget to drink water.  Water is good and helps flush the system.  Water is a natural lubricant and makes your colon happy in it's pants.  During this under eating phase, a small amount of protein is okay.  Like a hard boiled egg or maybe some yogurt, but no grains for right now.  I like to soft boil my eggs.  It allows me to peal the eggs and not get goop all over me, but I can still slurp up the egg since it's still soft.  I don't like the powdery nature of fully hard boiled egg's yolk.  Personal preference I'm told.  Now proteins need enzymes to digest and a good enzyme that can help and also speed up fat burning is Lipase.  Lipase is best gained from raw avocado, raw nuts and raw seeds.  You can eat these in the under eating phase just fine.  Careful with the nuts, though, pea nuts have protein in them.  So don't go over board on the nuts.  Walnuts and Almonds should be just fine.  A handful of those and you are set.  Or just bite into an avocado, that should be interesting.

Drinking tea is also okay during this phase.  I like good ol trusty green tea myself.  No honey though, which makes me sad.  Just straight tea or water or juice.  Nothing else.  Point is to simulate like you're out hunting for your food.  You should be thinking about what you are going to eat tonight and already have it planned out.  After you decide on your feast tonight, then you can focus on other things.  Like important things regarding your life.  School work, real work, ninjas, whatever concerns you.  So now it's time to over eat.

When over eating, you eat what you like, and want.  End of story.  The basic rules to follow is start with non-exciting foods first and work your way up to more aggressive foods.  Get as much variety and textures, colors, aromas, tastes, as possible in your meal.  And finally stop when you feel full or you are more thirsty than hungry.

When you practice over eating after a controlled fast your brain receives a signal that it should elevate metabolism in order to burn the extra calories.  When one over eats after a controlled fast, nutrients are assimilated at a greater rate, there is an acceleration of the anabolic process of repairing tissues and building muscles, depleted glycogen reserves are replenished, there's an increased secretion of adrenal hormones, thyroid hormones, and an elevation of androgenic hormones.  If repeating the controlled fast and then over eating, the body remembers this.  It then adapts to accommodate the large calorie meal and metabolism increases.  So let's cut to the chase.  What can you eat during this phase?

Anything.

I mean anything.  You want pizza, eat pizza.  You want cheese cake, eat cheese cake.  The only thing you can't have is processed sugars.  This means no High Fructose Corn Syrup.  If you are eating something loaded with saturated fats, be sure to exercise.  But that's eat.  Eat what you want and like.  Don't stop until you are full or feel more thirsty than hungry.  Then drink.  If after twenty minutes you are still hungry.  Start eating again, then stop when you are thirsty.  When you drink and are no longer hungry, you are done for the day.  That's it, and you finished your first day on the diet.  Which, realistically, this can't be called a diet.  This is a lifestyle and should be treated as such.

Something I should add.  A sort of schedule I follow:

Morning:       Water - 1 to 2 glasses
                  One Fruit
                  Tea (no sugar)

Mid Morning:  One Fruit
or Juice (I usually do carrot juice)
or Plain Yogurt; poached eggs (or soft/hard boiled eggs); Ricotta Cheese; or cottage cheese

Lunch:          Soup Broth (I love me chicken)
Salad - Mixed greens, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, mushrooms, etc.
Hard Boiled egg - optional (really if you are in need of some extra protein)

Afternoon Snack: Yogurt
                         or Juice
                         or Fresh Fruit

Dinner:         Salad (Eat First)
                  Steamed Veggies
Grains (no wheat for first week)

This is for the first week when you want to detox and get use to the diet.  The second week you add a small amount of protein.  Teaching the body to use the resources it has. 4 to 6 oz of Chicken, Turkey, eggs or meat.  You also need to eat a handful of nuts during this time.  If you find you are too full to eat the nuts and the proteins, sacrifice the protein to get the best out of the nuts.  On the third week you add carbs.  If you need to add more protein as you become more active, do so.  Carbs includes potatoes.  If you want, you can cycle these days.  Get the first week out of the way, and then 1 -2 days high carb, then 1 - 2 days low carb (high protein).  This way your body isn't really sure what's coming next, but must remain adaptive to whatever food you give it.  As always, remember to take a twenty minute break after eating to allow any satiety signals to reach the brain.  If you are thirsty more than hungry, drink.  If after twenty minutes you are still hungry, go to it.  Don't be afraid if your body tells you to eat half a horse.  That just may happen.

This was a very interesting read indeed, I am forced to ask though; what kind of qualifications do you have by that I mean are you a dietitian of some sort? I'm not putting you down or anything it's just something I feel should be answered just to know how seriously people should take your advice. Personally I like it and I might try it, but I would like to know the person giving me advice better.

This is very interesting. While reading your post I realized I'm already doing such a thing as I found it feel more natural. Can't wait to see the next part ;)

Kaltxí, ma oeyä tsmukan.

Are you looking to build muscle like a body builder or build lean muscle?  Protein is necessary to grow muscles.  I do this diet myself, and I couldn't do it at first.  I had to ease myself into it.  I would do one or two days of this, then a day or so back to normal eating, then back to two days or so of this lifestyle.  Now it's all I do.

Back to muscles.

There is an exercise routine I do that builds strength, but not muscles.  Denser muscles are stronger muscles.  Building muscles for the sake of size is weak muscles.  This diet takes you back to what you need to be.  So it will help you build denser muscles.  You should loose weight because you are returning to an instinctual method of eating.  A good trick is to go to a store and buy whey protein.  There is a video on youtube on how to make protein bars from whey protein.  It's a lot of peanut butter and whey, but it does the job.  Eat that after a good work out and you are on your way to building dense muscles.

I hope that helped.  If it didn't ask again.  I'll try better next time.

P.S.  As for my qualifications, no I'm not a dietitian.  My cousin is a doctor if that helps, but I've been into the health scene for a while now and research goes a long way.  To be more specific, I suppose, I am not a medical practitioner nor am giving advise to treat, medicate, or cure a disease or medical condition.  This is posted for educational purposes only, and all parties involved should consult with a physician whenever going on any sort of diet or changing a lifestyle that affects or may affect their health.  That out of the way, I do use this diet and enjoy it a lot.  But that's just me.  If you have a diet that works for you, awesome-sauce.

i agree with you in many respects about the diet but times change and so does the outlook on life. you mentioned the romans and greeks and i envy their lifestyle slightly with a code of honour and all

but all your describing is a very good diet and given it a historical background from what i can see . your saying that scavengers eat what they can but most of that happens to be "raw" meat nothing cooked.

im not trying to put a downer on this but you can eat a modern diet and still be very strong. we are much taller and therfore stronger than romans or greeks they won battles because of much better battle tactics not what they ate cause i bet the gauls ate exactly the same thing.

and if you want a real work out then do this

run 10km
then when you get back do 10 pressups, 10 situps, 10 crunches, 10 leglifts, 10 lunges,10 (proper) starjumps, 10 wide armed pressups, 10 close arm pressups, 10 heel taps, 10 ski squats for 10 secs each.
then 10 proper pull ups.

combine that with a good diet and youll get seriously strong. i have to do this for a canoe race im entering and iv put on 3 stone of muscle in 3 months

No, I don't take offense to you man-handling my way of life...jerk.  I kid.  I don't deny the health benefits of a modern diet.  That's fine.  And I suppose the Roman thing was worthy of Cold War propaganda, but I merely remark that to me I feel this will get me ready for a Na'vi mindset.  The whole predator mind is what I'm gunning for.  If you have a way that works better for you, than groovy.  As Walsche said in his book, "Ours is not the only way, ours is merely another way."

As for exercise, if that works for you, awesome.  I'm going to post my method tomorrow.  I hope people can take what they like and modify it to suite their own needs.  I hope more people comment on what kind of diet they use and exercise they use.  Maybe we can establish some sort of baseline that could help us all.  One mind is good, but fifty billion monkey brains is better.

yeah sorry i have hugely set views about things.

The old Uriuujìn

I really like this thread.

I think that going on the diet that Tìloran suggested would be an excellent idea, and I will personally try and start it tomorrow. Perhaps I'll start tonight, actually. Over-eating is something I like to do XD

I would also like to start doing Parkour, as well. Especially if I could find someone to train with me- I am afraid that I wouldn't be able to keep it up on my own. I think, though, to get back all of the muscle I've lost, I'm going to start running again.

i have another question, on the overeating part at the end of the day, you said dont eat processed sugars or high fructose corn syrup, so that includes ice cream even in the overeating phase?

Tíloran

Kaltxi, ma oeya tsmukan.

If the ice cream is made from High Fructose corn syrup that is a no no.  If it's made from sugar, normal sugar, than you're okay.  The processed sugars can shut down insulin production and may lead to Diabetes.  I wouldn't recommend eating ice cream since it's cold.  During night time your body switches over to digesting warm foods.  It's easier for your body to digest warmer foods during the later hours.  If you do eat ice cream, keep it minimal, at best.

If you want ice cream, you can have ice cream.  Here's an idea though.

Buy three bananas.  Peel them and place them in the freezer (probably in a plastic bag or so).  When they are really hard put them in a blender and grind away.  It's simple, but it's banana ice cream (sort of) and you are fulfilling your obligation of fruit during the day, and you are able to eat it during the time your digestive tract can handle it.  Just a thought.

i would have to say that the majority of my fruit serving intake is from mixed fruit juices made by dole, i also occasionally eat a honeycrisp apple or some pineapple. the juice is from mostly natural fruit juice too so im pretty sure im covered on fruit.

Actually I heard that eating like this is the exate wrong way to be healthy

I heard you should not eat any big meals but instead eat healthy smaller meals (like the hobbits I guess)

Ok not really like hobbits
but eating lots of small meals is healthy for your body for many reasons
If you pig out you only use a small amount of the nutriens then if you eat less and slowly so its better to eat less, eat slowly and eat more small meals

It does sound counter intuitive, huh?  But it is backed by some pretty good science.  Eating the frequent meals causes you to loose your hunter instinct.  Either way, this is just my way, it doesn't make it the only way.  Some people have had results off of the Atkin's diet, and I think that diet is a complete nightmare.  In the end whatever it takes to get healthy.  Well that's how I see it.

Also I addressed the nature of nutrient absorption in the original post.
