So what do you do to motivate yourself?

I have problems trying to motivate myself to do something, so I was wondering what you all do to motivate yourself.

I just have to imagine myself getting fat and playing Fallout for the rest of my life while living in an RV. Trust me, it's working so far.

Sometimes I can't be bothered to do anything toward anything, though, which is incredibly frustrating.

I get out of bed first.  ;D

Then I'll have a coffee, then have a shower while thinking about implications and possible benefits. Or else I'll think, "Dammit, it'll never get done otherwise". Get changed, and then go and look at it for another 15 minutes while having another coffee.  :-\

If it's work related, well I don't have an option, just have to go and do it. Or pass it off to an apprentice to do.  ::)

This is exactly my problem. In order to do anything, I need to get motivation from an outside source (such as watching Avatar). The only problem with that, is the original motivation slowly drains off, and I'm back where I was.

What about listening to music? When I need to do something, so long as my mood is not too bad, I find listening to music helps. I like soundtracks from films in particular, anything dramatic and fast paced; "He's a pirate" from Pirates of the Caribbean, the Theme from things like Indiana Jones. Wierd, but I find it pretty effective.

I listen to music, but it just doesn't do it for me. I need something that really reaches into me, something like Avatar, to allow me some time to act free of my usual chronic laziness... plus these rare things only work once.

The main reason for my being gone from these forums for so long was because the motivation that Avatar gave me had worn off, and even after watching the movie again, it did nothing for me. Only seeing the collector's edition recently has restored it a bit, but it's only a matter of time until it's gone again.

Would listening to the Avatar soundtrack work for you? Turn it up to ridiculous volume whenever it plays through your headphones - on of my favourite pasttimes!

Listening to "Iknimaya" and "Jake's First Flight" are what really get to you.

Nope. The soundtrack is awesome, but it's not the same. There are precious few things that do this, and therefore I try to get as much as I can done before it wears off. The most recent being of all things, the show Leverage. Don't ask me why, but it worked, so I ran with it.

If I could figure out a steady way to do it, then I would feel a lot more free than I do right now.

Not really the right topic, still; I quite like the track 'I am the Doctor' from the soundtrack of the most recent series of Doctor Who, too..

If I'm not motivated already I'm not likely to become motivated. But when I start dreaming about what might happen if I don't do something... I tend to get motivated.
