I'd tell you violin is easy, but I'd be lying    It's easy for me but that's because I've been playing since I was 3 1/2.

I'd love to have a harp.  Piano is...well, I won't say easy, but far easier to learn than any of your other preferences mentioned

I would like start learning classic guitar. A friend of mine was very enthusiastic about learning guitar, he bought one and downloads some lessons from the internet but now he is boring, his enthusiasm has gone and his guitar is standing against the wall full of dust. I told him that only with a teacher he would learn well. I do not think that he is willing to do. I also think I'll go and ask him if he wants to sell it to me.

if you search *any* song, then go down and click the link for 'chords' (not tabs) then you can see exactly where the chords are played in the song and if you put your mouse over the chord name, it will show you the finger placement. (the bottom string on the chord chart will be the closest string to you as you play)

I learn by ear. though bas is a bit easier than guitar because there's usually no chords in bass lines.

I am tone deaf, so I can't learn by ear if my life depended on it.

Outside of avatar I play paintball and airsoft with my team. Also i play lead guitar for my band along with vocals... and I play drums,bass,piano, and xbox (yes its an instrument too)

what is Tuxguitar, ma Nantxe'lan?

it is a free, open source GuitarPro clone.
you can open the tab files on Ulitmate guitar with this program.
it supports every tab format, except .gp6 which is used by the newest guitar pro version.
those tabs contain the sheet music as well as the tablature diagram of the song. with Tuxguitar you can even enable a guitar fret board where the single notes of a chord are marked with blue dots on every string, or a claivature.
the song itself can be played either with windows standart midi sounds, the java soundbank, or with a custom soundbank.

it's a great tool to support learning to play guitar and to learn new songs.
and i even use it to compose my songs

but keep in mind that the song tabs on ultimate-guitar.com are user made, thus they might be not 100% correct (or in worst case totally wrong)

it is actually quite easy to read tabs. for me it is even easier than reading sheet music
the lines are the strings on the guitar and the numbers represent the fret you have to hold. example:

This is the common C major chord in all 3 variants you might encounter.

0 "empty" string (if you know what i mean)

the first one is the "full" chord.
E: 3rd fret
A: 3rd fret
d: 3nd fret
g: empty string
b: 1st fret
e: empty string

second one is struck without the low E string being struck (hence no number) and the third one is with the low E string damped ^^
a note: the dampened string (aka Dead Note) marked by an X is often used as an rythm element or special accent in a song, so you might encounter a tab which has parts like those:

---x---0---3---x---

to play this you can simply put your finger gently over all strings (almost like playing natural harmonics) or if you have a chord, lift your fingers slightly, so they only rest on the strings instead of pushing them down. Prince for example used those dead notes quite often in intros or bridges in his songs.

AFAIK the number of hyphens determines the length of a beat/note, but i can't really remember how...

this is a primitive C major walz scheme with changing bass (on E and A string, going c,g,c,g, etc.) to be played by finger picking.
it simply means you have to play arpeggio (or a melody line, depending on the song).
it all depends on the collums. as you can see the 1st and the 4th collum have 2 notes to play, all other collums include only one note.

by the way: i found a video of tuxguitar in action: CLICK ME, best to watch in fullscreen mode.
Unfortunately it is in french, but nevertheless you can see how tuxguitar works, even the fretboard is shown. and due to the fretboard you don't have to actually read the tabulatures, since you're shown which string to push on which fret.

I think it's a little bit complicated, but perhaps that is because i have not started working on this yet.
