I'm trying to learn the language but I'm worried I'm mispronouncing stuff and I don't want to sound like a skxawng when I talk.  So far I only know a handful of words but I fully intend to be fluent before Avatar 2.  That's my goal anyway.  That and my whole family is more into Star Wars so it gets lonesome being the only Avatar fan I know.  It would be cool to have some real Na'vi-hearted friends.  I have my own place and could easily host get togethers on weekends and would welcome anyone who could help me learn the language.  So if anyone lives in this area I would be super excited to meet you!  I myself live in Orangevale, a small town? city? something, haha.  Well it's near the highway to downtown.  Anyway, I'm rambling.  I hope there are some Omaticaya in Sac or I'll just have to start commuting to the bay area.  Irayo!  Hope to meet you soon!  Eywa ngahu!

The bay area is loaded with Na'vi speakers. More than anywhere else.

I am on the opposite side of you by about the same distance, up in Reno.

It would be fun to organize a meetup in Sac. It would save a lot of driving, and would make it an easier 'day trip'!

Oh my Eywa!  Really?!  I would be thrilled to organize a meet up!  However, I've never done so.  I have no clue how to get word around or anything!  Can you give me some advice?  Irayo!  I'm simply dying here in Sac all alone!   :'(  I need some Na'vi friends like you wouldn't believe!  My family keeps calling me an idiot for trying to learn the language.  Star Wars fans.  Ugh.  Anyway, how do I get that started?  I have my own apartment and if it was on a weekend (Friday/Saturday) I would be happy to host an over-nighter if everyone didn't mind pitching in for some pizza!  Ooh this is so exciting!  You have no idea!  I'm literally surrounded by tawtute! It's horrible.  Some real Omaticaya would be such a breath of fresh air!  Plus I own the Collector's Edition of Avatar on DVD (and the sound track), though regrettably not on blu ray.  Hey I'm a college student!   ;)  But still!  We can watch it and eat pizza and popcorn!  Yay!  I'm so excited!  Please tell me how to go about doing this!  Should I create a new topic somewhere?  I'll have to pick a date.  Wow!  I think I'll shush now and let you tell me what I should do if you would be so kind.  Irayo so much!  Eywa ngahu!

You are doing precisely the right thing by advertising in this thread. You need to watch for more folks that are interested. Posting in the California Bay Area thread might catch some attention.

Once you have some interest, pick a date. Although you dorm space might be OK, many meetups occur at a good restaurant, or some other popular spot. As far as an Avatar viewing goes, that can be done at your dorm if there is sufficient interest. There might be a more public place where one can set up a DVD player and a monitor. (I can supply the DEED Blu-ray and player if you have a suitable monitor).

Choose a time and date only after you have some interested parties. November and early December is probably a good time for a meetup. A Christmas/holiday themed meetup later on December might work, too. Of course, December 18th is Avatar's birthday. That falls midweek this year, but the weekend before might work. Midweek meetups don't work well unless everyone is local.

Hope this helps!

Irayo it helps.  I was thinking of hosting it at my apartment (it's not a dorm, that would be way too tiny a space) because I was also hoping someone could help me a bit with the language and finding a place in public to sit and talk and think sounds hard.  I don't want to go to a library cause they have weird hours and you have to be super quiet.  The mall might work but it's really loud there.  Am I making sense?  I want to be able to talk and get to know everyone and to pick up as much of the language as I can absorb from everyone so when I practice on my own it's easier and makes more sense and I'm more confident.  Where do people usually get together?  What types of public places?  The nearest mall is in Citrus Heights, but it's really a pathetic mall.  The Roseville Galleria is neat but it's so darn big everyone would get lost.  I don't know.  What would you recommend?

If its language instruction you are looking for, meetups (in my experience) are not the place for that. You might start to learn, but then you get off on the weather, sports, politics, school, you name it. The more people there, the harder it is to do. (The exception to this rule would be if things were set up to be a formal 'class'. Even these drift off topic, if you go listen to the recordings of the Na'vi Language Workshop from September 2010.)

For learning to speak, things like Skype and Teamspeak are nice, because they are free, and don't involve travel. Homework for the written part can be done by email (This is how the Neytiri project works). Since you are close, and in the same time zone, I might be willing to help you out some (although I am not the best teacher there is, by any means).

Any meetups should be saved for doing fun, social activities together, with language use as being a casual part of the activity.

Ah I see.  Okay then.  Hmm.  There's not much to do around here.  No theme parks or anything.  What to do?  Well I still want to get a group together just to have some Na'vi friends you know?  How do you get a skype account anyway?  I've been meaning to get one.  It's free?  Hmm.  Well I'll think on what we could do.  Cause it does sound fun!  Just gotta think,

Not much to do in Sac?? Sacramento has a wonderful zoo (with a nearby park). They have a wonderful railroad museum. They have an 'old town' district. They have a mall downtown with lots of areas to meet up. They have at least one IMAX theater, and a historic theater (both in the aforementioned mall). I am sure there are some wonderful parks down on the American river. They have a top-notch triple A baseball team (but not as good as the National Champion Reno aces!  ;) ... and they have not one, but two Fry's Electronics stores!

I am overdue for a zoo visit, anyway. And I need a day for the railroad museum!

EDIT: and there is a Celtic festival in Nevada City this weekend!

Haha yeah it's just I'm terrified of driving downtown.  I hate driving to begin with but driving in the city makes me go into panic mode.  I do love the rail road museum though.  And the shops near it are all awesome.  I would love to spend a day in old sac and go to the museum but the thought of driving there scares the crud out of me.  If we could arrange a carpool?  Parking down there sucks anyways.  What do you think?

Kaltxì ma aysmuk,

Sounds like you are getting some great advice there for a mini-meet up from 'Eylan.  Skype is definitely a great way to communicate especially if you find someone to learn Na'vi with.  There are also a load of Na'vi tutorials on You Tube that you can watch and practice with...better still with a Na'vi friend.

As for doing a meet up, I tell you there is nothing like meeting up with fellow Avatar Friends.  My advice would be to definitely meet up in public so all parties feel safe.  Especially if it is for the first time.  Zoos, parks, museums are ideal.  You can then talk Avatar all day and enjoy a great day out.  Once you get to know folks then going round someone's house for and Avatar viewing is the icing on the cake.

It's a shame you could not make it to the meet up in Seattle in the summer.  You would have had one massive Na'vi lesson from Karyu Pawl.  But all is not lost as we were allowed to video it and hopefully they will be released soon.  Keep an eye out ;)

In the mean time hope you have a great meet up.

Eywa ngahu,

Alan
P.S. I had a super mini-meet up today.  I went to meet my Avatar mate who is now my cinema buddy!  (Went to see looper - not recommended, but meeting up with you Avatar family is!)

Driving in downtown Sac is enough to scare anyone-- Walking is downtown Sac is scary as well! The nightmare of one-way streets, light rail tracks, and buildings right in the middle of where a road should be (not to mention the expensive parking!) make this a perfect example of how not to build a city. That said, I am willing if necessary.

Downtown Reno is MUCH easier to get around in! For that matter, so is Seattle. And I can say the same for Chicago, after having spent eight days there last month.

A better idea might be to use the bus or light rail to come downtown. I suspect that Sacramento has park and ride areas, or maybe you live close to a bus route.

Then, there is the zoo. Lots of room to park there, and quieter place to meet (but no good food choices I know of close to the zoo). As for visiting the zoo, I am a zookeeper myself here in Reno and would be kind of a 'professional guide'.

I agree with everything Alan says. And like Alan, I prefer public meeting places over private. And meetups are a great way to build friendships, even if not much language learning goes on.

Alright makes sense.  But the Sac zoo is quite pathetic.  I've been there a few times and it's got nothing on other zoos I've seen.  Sorry I've been away, school is stealing me.  Maybe some time in December once school is out.  I have a bus pass and could take light rail to downtown.  Or a bus.  So far though you are the only one interested in a meet up.   :(  Maybe once I'm out of school I can work on promoting a Sac meet up.  But right now I'm so busy my tail is gonna fall off!  I would like to go to down town Sac and hang out at the train museum, or maybe the art museum.  Both places are really cool.  So right now we'll plan for something around December I guess.  Irayo for the advice.  Now to get a Skype account. . .

Sometime you ought to come up to Reno, especially on a Sunday, and check out our zoo :)

The art museum and the train museum are both excellent choices. That would be a kosman way to spend a Saturday! The challenge will be to pick a day when Donner Pass is not closed by a snowstorm ;)

Kosman?  Heehee sounds fun!

Ahh, 'Kosman'.  It is Na'vi for 'Wonderful', 'terrific', 'fantastic'.  Looks like you might be new here.  Welcome to Learn Na'vi.  :D

Hope you enjoy yourself here.  If you need a hand on learning Na'vi there are some beginner's lessons on video that were recorded at AvatarMeet 2012. You'll find them on Dr Paul Frommer's blog, naviteri.org. Just click on the link below:

Hope that helps and welcome aboard ma 'eylan (friend)
