Na'vi is just a spoken language, so they don't have an alphabet... (just those, what we write here, but that's rather a help for learning the language :D)

I was wondering this while watching the movie. To they ever write anything (I know they don't in the movie)? I'd be really surprised if a species as intelligent and developed as the Na'vi didn't have some form of writing.

Pandoran creatures have a bond with Eywa and each other. Apparently, Eywa catalogues all events, memories, etc. that the Na'vi have, so there is no need for them to write it down. They can upload or download memories and other things at will.

The only alphabet is a Romanized one created for humans to learn Na'vi. (The one we use).

And then an unwritten language is nothing so peculiar. 90% of the languages of Earth are unwritten.  ;)

Goes to show how much I know about languages ^^^. Heck, I failed out of most of my English classes and I'm American.

I definitely buy their not having a writing system due to the electrochemical network and the tsaheylu. But maybe they'll be inspired to create one at some point now that they've been shown that there's a significant threat to that way of life, or just for artistic purposes/for the hell of it. It'd be interesting if different clans came up with different orthographies.

I don't think any formal and consistent writing system is likely to develop within the timespan of the trilogy.

That said, I can see an informal and slightly inconsistent system of ideographs appearing in tapestries. These could be a precursor to some form of writing but the writing would take a lot longer to develop.

It might be interesting to imagine what kind of script would most fit Na'vi culture, if they ever wanted one.  I'd lean toward something vertical, like classic mongolian, that would mesh with the importance of trees.

There's a thread where someone tried to come up with a script for the Na'vi in the fan art section.  But it should be taken as that - art, since it's been stated officially that Na'vi is not a written language.

Thanks for that info, very interesting (though not vertical) art idea:

A vertical version would also look OK:

Perhaps it would be written top-to-bottom, right-to-left around special trees whose bark was suited to displaying such symbol without damage.
