Earth fauna and flora in Na'vi language
« on: September 07, 2016, 10:02:38 am »
Since there aren't native Na'vi names for earth species, how can I say them in Na'vi? Do I need to use loanwords? or use several words to describe them?  :-\

I think, it would be both. Some animals that looks quite similar to the pandoran equivalents would have the Na'vi names, like lion/tiger -> palulukan, or uses the diminutive versions like for normal or small cats: palulukantsyìp. However, this would work for general things or a group of certain animals. We have a word for bird (yayo), but we don't have a word for eagle, pigeon, albatross etc.

Mod: Moving this thread to /Vocab subboard. :)

The words I need are more like livestocks such as pig, cow or chicken. Since Na'vi people don't raise animals, we probably need to use loanwords. But can I use few words to describe them?

For cow, pig or chicken, one would need loanwords. One we could describe them which will be not easy.

EDIT: We have one official loanword: tsyìräfì - giraffe

Talioang can be generally used to describe cattle-- i.e. cows (beef or milk), zebu, etc.
'Angtsìk could be used to describe more aggressive cattle-like animals, and also creatures like rhinos.
Pa'li can be used for horses or zebra
Yerik can be used for deer species, some of which are raised for livestock (fallow deer and reindeer here). That term would also, I think work for goats and maybe even sheep.
For swine, there really isn't a Na'vi equivalent. Pìk might work for a loanword.

Actually, according to the Activist Survival Guide, the Na'vi are just starting to experiment with domesticaltion of animals.

I'd say loans would work for now with Terran livestock. Using Pandoran "best-fit" isn't very clear exactly what Earthly animal you refer to, with exception of vastly/commonly used ones like palulukantsyìp for cat, for example.

Pìk, kaw, tsyìkìn for Pig, cow, chicken, etc.

For the word horse you can use pa'li or pa'litsyìp instead of a loan like 'horsì'.

Yes, I think that pa'li as horse is reasonable idea  :) I would use rather pa'li than pa'litsyìp in this case.

We only know the Na'vi name for one Earth species, humans.

I'm not sure if I was the first /only user of Rrta Ikran for Dragon. It's 100% non-canon either way.
Pasha, an Avatar story, my current fanfic, Avatar related.

The Dragon Affair my last fanfic, non Avatar related.

It's quite nice translation for dragon.
I would say it rather as "Ikran 'Rrtayä" :)

Interesting. 'Rrta ikran and Ikran 'Rrtayä have distinctly different 'feels' to them. I personally like 'Rrta ikran better.

Did you mean 'Rrtayä?
The order of the words also give an emphasis or a preference to a certain word.
