Cooking ('em)
« on: October 13, 2019, 04:22:59 pm »
I'm trying to learn a few phrases (as well as build my sentence forming skills...
So here goes...
Oe 'em. ("I cook." Right)
Oel wutsoti 'em. (I cook dinner..."I, Dinner(/meal), cook."

I *will* cook. (Here's where I run into difficulty.)
Oe ay'em...(???)
Same situation
Oel wutsoti ay'em ('ayem?) I will cook dinner...

Both of these examples are only future tense. I will cook dinner, as opposed to I *will* (determination) cook dinner.

Oel wutsoti 'em. (I cook dinner..."I, Dinner(/meal), cook."
Right :)

I *will* cook. (Here's where I run into difficulty.)

Oel wutsoti ay'em ('ayem?) I will cook dinner...
Right, except one mistake: not ay'em but 'ayem.

so:
Oe 'ayem.
Oel wutsoti 'ayem.

To ease your search you can use online dictionaries:

dict-navi.com helps you search any word, and if you click a verb you'll have to your right a table that tells you where to place iv, am, ol, er, ay, ìy, etc.
There's also a conjugation tool with more explanations if you already have the verb: https://wimiso.nl/navi/verbs/

Have fun!

Irayo! I knew about dict-navi, of course (it's practically a bible to me! Lol!) But I didn't know about the verb (side?) menu... irayo!

I looked at "cook" at dict-navi and found that useful menu, irayo, but, perhaps (probably) due to my limited gramatical knowledge, I couldn't find the present tense " am cooking"...
That's not the same as "cook" is it? " 'em"
Or is it used similar to "lu?"

Yeah, present tense is 'em (without infixes) :)

Yeah and also when you say "I am cooking dinner" in meaning "I am cooking dinner and I still didn't finish it" you can use also infix <er> (imperfective, unfinished):
Oel wutsoti 'erem.

Oel wutsoti 'em is just present simple tense, so "I cook dinner", I would say.

oh, it's called the "imperfective", there's no present progressive in Na'vi.
