Kefu - does it exists?
« on: August 31, 2012, 04:09:38 pm »
In our Czech grammar we have this statement:

coordinating conjunctions:
- for copulative sentences: ulte (and)
- for disjunctive sentences: fu (or)
- for disjunctive sentences in negation: kefu (nor)
- for adversative sentences: slä (but)

however, kefu can't be found in any dictionary, here's the only usage I found (very old thread....)
So, is it correct word? Can be used? Is there other way how to say "nor"? Did Paul ever speak about it? Do we have any information?

Correct? I’d say no. Never seen it before. Seems like a helping made-up word (as was done so often in the early days) along the lines of fuke

The idea of ‘nor’ is conveyed with the ftxey … ftxey … construction (which is the reason, I think, for the fuke > *kefu approach) or the listing of choices.

ftxey Na’vi ftxey Sawtute, ke lu kawnglan nìwotx
“neither Na’vi nor Skypeople are completely malicious”

txana krr yola krr ke tsranten
“neither long time nor short time matters”

Among other possible ways of translation, of course ;)

To be honest, I was not aware of the existence of *"kefu".
Possibly because Blue Elf is conscientiously checking ancient parts of our language documents, where my eyes go only accidentally. :)

I agree with Plumps, now deleting it from the grammar summary.

More randomly than conscientiously  ;D I'm wondering why I didn't notice this problem earlier...
