More marking :D
« on: March 08, 2010, 08:24:13 pm »
Another attempt at sentences, still trying to see if I can get this right.

Oe-l lu txen ke-new
I don't want to be awake

Oe-l lu unil-si new
I want to be dreaming (wanted to say sleeping but can't find better substitute)

'awpo-l latem a-lìma fya'o pefya?
how can one person change the future? (Can anyone think of a better term for future?)

Thanks for all the help everyone  :)

Kaltxì ma tsmuke.

For the first two:

The suffix "-l" isn't needed and it is spelled neu.

Once again the suffix -l is not needed. You only need it to indicate the subject when there is a direct object. I have no clue what lìma is.

As for "future" the only thing I can think of is add the infix <ìy> to latem.

Oe lu txen ke-neu.

Oe lu unil-si neu.

'Awpo l<ìy>atem fya'o pefya.

EDIT: -si isn't a suffix. What were you going for?

EDIT 2: (So many edits) I could be wrong about the -l thing but I haven't seen -l without -ti or some varyation thereof.

Kaltxì ma mesmuktu.

Ngaru tsap'alute si oe, ma Zelenal, but he had it right--the word is spelled new.  Make sure you're using the most recently updated dictionary.  I believe Karyu Pawl used the "eu" spelling in the script to help the Avatar actors pronounce their lines correctly.

Ma Nerume, a few things:

First, the verb latem is naturally intransitive, so it's used for things like "The wind is changing," rather than "I changed my outift" (lame examples, i know, but i'm working off too little sleep...).  To use it to mean "to change something," you add the causative infix <eyk>.

Second, we do have a word for future (although it took me a while to track it down):  zusawkrr (literally "coming-time").

The translation for that sentence you're working with now would be "How does one person change the future?"  But to express the concept of "can" you would use the modal verb tsun ("can, be able").  Whenever another verb follows a modal verb, that second verb (i believe the linguists call it a "slave") takes the subjunctive infix <iv>--so, for example, "i can hunt" is oe tsun tivaron.  So, your sentence, "How can one person change the future?" would be

Pefya 'awpol tsun leykivatem zusawkrrti?
Pefya 'awpo-l             tsun l<eyk><iv>atem       zusawkrr-ti
How  one.person-ERG  can change<CAUS><SBJ> future-ACC

If it's helpful to you, think of the causative infix as changing the verb to say "make s.t. change"--so, this sentence literally means, "How can one person make the future change?"

The verb new is also a modal verb, like tsun (and, in case you want to know, so is zene, "must"), so, again, you need the subjunctive infix <iv>.  So, "I don't want to be awake" would be

Oe ke new livu txen

We have a word for sleep, hahaw, and then to get the sense of "sleeping" as an on-going state, you have two options:  You can use the imperfective infix <er>, which keeps hahaw as a verb, or you can use the participle infix <us>, which would give you the adjective form of "sleeping".  For this sentence, i prefer the latter, since it parallels nicely with the previous sentence, but whatever floats your boat.  I'll give you both.

Oe new *hirvahaw
Oe new **livu husahaw
*Some infixes combine into sort of "hybrids."  In this example, adding the subjunctive infix <iv> snd the imperfective <er> gives you the hybrid infix <irv>.
**Note in the second one that since husahaw is an adjective you need the verb lu again.

Oe sìlpey tsnì oeyä sì'eyng ngaru srung silvi, ma Nerume.  Eywa ngahu.

Edit:  I had a verb tense wrong, but i fixed it now.  Also, this becomes a moot point using these translations, but lìm is actually not an adjective but a verb; it means "to be far (away)"--yeah, i know, a little odd.

And Zelenal is right, you can't use tense-markers on anything but verbs ;)

Don't worry about it, ma Zelenal.  If the problem is that you can't access pdf files while on the Wii, try using this dictionary.  It's not as pretty as Taronyu's, but it should be pretty up-to-date.  Eywa ngahu, ma tsmuke.

Irayo ma tigermind  ;D
Once again you have been of immense help.
How do you know if a verb is naturally intransitive?

Kaltxì ma Nerume =)

I actually don't remember how i found out that latem was intransitive, but i think it must have come from a Frommer e-mail at some point...  But the Learn Na'vi Wiki vocab list (which you can find here) has many of the verbs marked as transitive or intransitive.

The <eyk> infix also came in an e-mail from Karyu Pawl...  Lemme see...

The best i could find was this thread here, in which the causative infix became known to us at...some point in the conversation...

Have you seen the Na'vi Wikibook?  It's a bit dense, and doesn't make for the most exciting reading (well, not for me, anyway), but it does a fairly good job of summarizing what we know about the language.  NeotrekkerZ also made his "Na'vi in a Nutshell", which is quite good.
