"Quick" question...
« on: March 09, 2011, 09:57:44 am »
i thought this would be the right place to ask... forgive me if it isn't :(

I'm planning on making a tattoo with a handprint and a text and well i want it correct before i tattoo it, so it isn't wrong.  The text i want is " i will love you forever, no matter what Neytiri ". First i wrote "Nga lu yawne oer" and i got a pm from someone from this forum on Avatar-forums who said it should be like "Oer lu tì'i'avay nga yawne, ke tsranten 'u a len"

just wondering if its correct... could some kind soul help a rookie out..  ??? :D

Just confused by "no matter what Neytiri" :P

For "I will love you forever", it should be Oer lu tì'i'avay krrä nga yawne, or, saw somewhere said frakrr always can replace "forever"..
We stress the meaning at the beginning and the ending of the sentence, and with the more popular order, I think for this Nga lu yawne oeru frakrr would better..

Well i'd add "krrä" after tì'i'avay to make it "until the end of time," much closer to "forever." Also, I'd infix "lu"with <ay> to make it "will be" and add "ma Neytiri" at the end. Lastly (this is just me) i'd reorder the words a bit to "krrä tì'i'avay nga layu oeru yawne ma Neytiri" I think would look better that way. I do believe "ke tsranten" is the closest way we have to say "no matter what" but if someone knows a better way please say it :)

-Txonä Rolyu

Edit: that's true, you could also use frakrr and say "nga layu oeru yawne frakrr"

Sometimes tenses can be omitted, especially in these texts, or lyrics, poems etc..

If it's "no matter what happends, Neytiri", then I would say

ke tsranten tìlen ma Neytiri.

but I think we can make it looks better ;D

Nga frakrr oeru leiu yawne,
ma Neytiri ke tsranten tìlen.

9 syllables for each line («ei», oe count as 1), end with e ..

this is not good un my opinion (no offense).
ma Neytiri should in the first sentence. it can't be in the second one. how can you say Neytiri no matter what?
it should be I will love you forever Neytiri, no matter what happens. it's in the first sentence.
I think it should be:
nga frakrr oeru layu yawne ma Neytiri, ke tsranten 'upe layen

or you can even make it three parts:
ma Neytiri, frakrr nga layu oeru yawne, ke tsranten 'upe layen

I would be extremely careful of these underlined parts. We have exactly one Frommerian example of a question word (something with -pe+ in it) being used outside of an actual question:

Quote
Pol pole’un futa pehem si nì’en

He decided what to do on a hunch

And I am not convinced it is not a mistake. Even if it's not, there might be special requirements that need be fulfilled before this is allowed.

If I were you, I would hold off on tattooing this particular sentence into your skin until we have confirmation that it is legal.

Yeah. But then we run the risk of 'upe actually being the right way to say it, and 'u a layen sounding really weird.

Two, actually: Furia fyape fkol serar lì’fyati awngeyä, leiu set nìlaw pxaya sute a oeto lu sìltsan! is from his comment at na'viteri.

But I agree, ke tsranten 'upe layen doesn't seem right to me here.

well than someone should ask Karyu Pawl about this
I did comment on it in his blog, but received no reply. That probably means it is not a mistake, but I'd still wait for more examples before writing it on my body in permanent marker (never mind tattooing it :o).

Ooh, I missed that! Thanks for pointing it out. Almost certainly not a mistake then, unless he was having a bad day. ;D

I think in both cases the clause with interrogative pronoun should be treated as a question. Like Pol pole’un futa "pehem si?" nì’en. A little weird, but it seems to be the case.

I was thinking the same thing. Furia fyape fkol serar lì’fyati awngeyä, ... looks like as to "how does one use our words?", ... to me.
We need more examples before we can say anything for sure, though. :-\

or you can even make it three parts:
ma Neytiri, frakrr nga layu oeru yawne, ke tsranten 'upe layen
I just realized something else: disregarding the correctness of 'upe, the final sentence should be ke tsranten fwa 'upe layen. Multiple verbs do not like to cohabit in the same clause.

If I make a mistake, please bring it to my attention for karma.

sorry for that. it's just that we want to find the best and correct way to say your sentence. it is normal that you're confused since you only registered a little time ago and you still don't know all the Na'vi grammar. everybody went through this stage.
