Okay, so what I'm attempting to do is come up with a word for "singer", but my issue is there are two listed words which mean "song" (going on the basis that noun+<-yu> = a person who does that noun)

rol is listed in the dictionary as "sing"
tìrol says it means "song" but...
way is also listed as meaning "song" and waytelem is listed as "song chord"

Does it make sense for me to make the logic jump that given this, way and waytelem refer to music, and tìrol is a "capital S song" as when Neytiri talks about "since the time of the first Songs"?  Thus making "singer" something like Tìrolyu?

If I'm totally off-base please do let me know also!  I looked back a couple pages but couldn't find anything similar, so...

Irayo! ;D

The -yu ending goes onto verbs, not nouns (for which -tu is used).  So, rolyu, assuming we're not going to get a special word for "singer".

That's very helpful!  And yes, I suspect there might be a separate word for "Singer" but as we don't have one yet I'm forced to improvise.  I can always update when/if the proper word comes out.

Being trained in anthropology, there are so SO many words I wish I knew, and things like what kin naming system the Na'vi use.  What can I say, I'm a bit of an Anthro-geek, but yes, in a verbal-only society, "songs" and "singers" are far more important than how we think of them, being holders of lore and such.

Anyway I'm rambling. ::)  Thanks ever so!

We have hopes questions about what sort of kinship system they have will get an answer.
