I'm not sure, but I've always thought it was just simply according to one's taste. :) To accommodate a line's length in a song, for example, or just so it sounds better.

Well, Na'vi tends to omit a lot of things when the meaning stays clear. Ay+ prefix is the most common example.

That's true! So what I said can apply to many things in Na'vi also.. Just like the free word order, the subject being dropped, the position of an adposition, etc. :)

Just thought I'd mention this as it's kind of related: you can't omit the a if you use the form alunta
