Tiny and Otherwise Ridiculous Words
« on: January 23, 2012, 09:52:22 am »
I don't think I'm quite qualified to move up to Intermediate, and I feel like this might ease some newbie fears or curiosities.  So, I'll go ahead and ask: Do Na'vi have tiny and otherwise useless/ridiculous words?

Psst!
Hey!
Okay!
Ow!
Oof!
Bah!
Psh.

And, I know hangham and hrh, but for those of us who don't really use chatspeak or l33tsp34k, would hrh be extended to "haha" or something different?  Considering they have no written alphabet, I assume so...unless they laugh differently ???

I'm sure I'll have some other words later on. ;D

ko is explained by Frommer on the wiki:

http://wiki.learnnavi.org/index.php/Canon

Quote from: Paul Frommer on 09 January 2010
As for ko, I don't know any Japanese but I did have in mind Mandarin ba, a sentence-final particle glossed by Li and Thompson as "solicit agreement." Typical translations of ba are: "Don't you think so?""Wouldn't you agree?" "Let's . . ." "Why don't you . . ." "I'll do X, OK?" I've used ko for all such things, maybe a bit more widely than ba

Psst!

Maybe "tse" although that's not usually as discreet as "psst!"

Hey!

A word has been proposed for that, although not yet official: 'ay!

Okay!

"Tam" or "tsun tivam"

Ow!

You can hear it in the movie when Jake steps on a Na'viyä kxetse.  It comes naturally to any language :)

Oof!

Na'vi doesn't really have a defined word for that.

Bah!

"Pak," is probably the closest we have to that, although it can't be used by itself.

Psh.

"Pxasìk" might work, although beware that it is a vulgar word in Na'vi (apparently the Na'vi think that apathy is the worst thing ever that can happen to fko).

Another word, often abused by Xelloss: nang!

There's also "wou" from English "whoa", "au!", and "oìsss!"
