Two sentences from eng. to Navi
« on: January 28, 2012, 07:42:05 am »
Would someone have suggestions about how to say the following sentences in Na'vi?
"And you will expose his puppeteer behavior"
and
"Will die in returning the birthright he stole".

These are for my song translation, but apparently getting translation help in the Song-forum is a bit more difficult!  :D

Sorry to say this, but I....don't know that it's possible to translate those and get the same meaning. 'Puppeteer behavior' and 'birthright' would be difficult if not impossible to translate.

I agree with that, we can probably translate those but they're going to become very, very wordy and unwieldy. If you still want me to try though...

@Txonä Rolyu: Well, it is probably that it will be hard to translate. Blue Elf suggested "birth he destroyed" for "birtright he stole"... I'm not really interested in an exact translation, more like, what'd get he point across?
@Ftiafpi: I would very much like if you would try. As said, I'm not interested in a literal translation in this situation. :)
@Alyara Arati, 'sneaky' is definitely good for 'puppeteer'. I'm not sure about gift for birthright, but consider it considered! :P

Okay, as this is a song I'm going to match the syllables and meter of the original lines as best as I can.

ulte ngal w<eyk><ay>ìntxu pe-y tì-sy<us>ep-ti (12 syllables)
and you-AGT show-CAUSE-FUT he-GEN exploit-GER-PAT.
And you will expose his trapping behavior.
Original: And you will expose his puppeteer behavior. (12 syllables)

terkup tengkrr tätxaw tì-n<us>okx-ti a m<ol>unge. (14 syllables)
die-FUT while return birth-GER-AGT which take-PER.
Will die while returning the birthing which was taken.
Original: Will die in returning the birthright he stole. (11 syllables)

Alternative: Use stxeli (gift) instead of "birthing". I think this would work better.

Edited: Fixed "poy" to "pey".

HMmmm. I'm just looking at the 2nd one here...perhaps we could say "stxeli(ti) tìnusokxä"? Might be a bit closer to the meaning. Just a thought

Not bad. But genitive of po is peyä, which can be shortened to pey, but it can be confusing a "pey" is also verb "to wait". I think that full form peyä should be used.
Edit: mistake corrected

I think the word you're thinking of is "rey" ;) "Pey"= to wait

Small mistakes for everyone! :) Thanks for catching that. I'm going to stick with pey as I think it's obvious which is being used by context.

Now that I've listened to the original song a bunch my translation of "birthright" to "the (act) of birthing" isn't correct. The song is referring to the kingdom of Camalot that Moragan believes was stolen from her. So, perhaps we should just change this to something related to olo'eyktan or similar?

'Birthright' is really hard to define, especially in respect to Na'vi culture, where there really aren't clearly defined rights, not even with the Olo'eyktan. But the general idea is (and I think Ftiafpi sees it now) of some property or title you inherit simply by being born in the right situation. Succession in many 'Rrtan monarchies is by birthright.

'Puppeteer' is a tough one, too.

Then I guess I'll stick with my original alternative of "gift" for "birthright" and I think "exploiting" is about the best we can do. It doesn't match the original meaning but fits well with the context of the song.
