Hi! I found an ingenious way to practice vocab!

: Make a picture on paint and put it as ur desktop background. I really think noone can avoid their desktop. That way, u just take a random look at your desktop, and poof, you know a new word. And when you know all the words you just change background. Easy as that!

What kind of picture are you talking about?

Here is a tool I maintain. You have to purchase a program for about $20 (but you can try it for 30 days free), and then plug in the Na'vi vocabulary. It will then flash words on your screen during periods of inactivity. It also has a desktop item that does the same thing in miniature (may not work in Windows 7).

The list is about a month old at this point, and I am about due to update it (check back every month or so for updates). Since these are based on text files, you can also alter them to your specific needs.

yeah you lost me at $20 program xD (I like my free open source alternatives <3) Besides, I havent been a windows user for about 2 years and I've never owed a mac

this DOES soun like a really cool idea though. Again I say I totally support visual assocation to learn Na'vi (or languages in general)

If there was a free and/or open source program for doing this, I would seriously consider moving everything over to it. However, a diligent search (at the time I started the project almost two years ago) failed to find one. Any suggestions? Would you, ma programmer that you are, like to write one (cross platform preferably)?

what, a program which rotates desktop backgrounds? or a widget that rotates vorab? both have been done, i am certain. also, i know nothing about windows development. all my work thus far has ben aimed at linux,my personal os of choice. ill say this: if i had $20 and a pc running windows, thats what i would totally be setting up right now

Just a picture where all the words are written. Of course, of one knows paint well, I suppose one could make a picture of the word. E.g.: for the word "makto" u could draw Neytiri riding the palulukan.
If it is possible, I'd upload the picture I'm using this week. It's in norwegian, but u'll get the idea.

If using pictures, better is to not write also meaning in your language, but only Na'vi word. This way Ngaynume works/ed and still if I read "stawm", I see Jake how his "mikyun" is tested after he entered avatar first time

(I think it was lesson/Prezzi 2)

Ma Tirea, Linux is my first choice for OS as well (and I think you know that!) They just don't give me a choice in the matter at work (they all but forced me to be one of the first people at the station to run Window$ 7, presumably so I could help others with it.)

I'll take a look at this, and see if it works next week. If it does, I will try and port the current dictionary to it.

What would you use for this purpose under Linux?

I don't know, because I know a great percentage of the words already.

But I did think about doing something like this, since my involvement in this here forum post.

I use GNOME 3, so I would use something like THIS to do what OP is talking about

EDIT: That link is for Ubuntu (or any of its derivatives which use apt) For everything else, you can always compile and install

If you were only aiming at Linux you could probably use the old trick of drawing to the root window. It should let you have dynamically updated content in the background. [The best example I can think of is XSnow: http://janswaal.home.xs4all.nl/Xsnow/Pictures/xsnow2.GIF]
The main problem is that Compiz and Nautilus don't like it very much and tend to break things. Works fine with Openbox though.
