Who do you think you are??
« on: October 29, 2012, 03:14:30 pm »
today I found interesting question - how to say phrase from the subject?
First idea: Ngal fpìl futa pesu lu nga?

but I don't like it somehow. (to be more difficult, this is asked by person to animal :))

Are here some betters choices?

Pesu fpìl futa nga lu

or perhaps

Pesu fpìl ngal a fwa nga lu?

In this case, using a person term to describe the animal makes sense, seeing that the animal can apparently communicate, or that the speaker acts as if the animal can communicate.

Somehow, I was under the impression that the presence of -pe+ removed the need for case markers. But you are correct:

Pesul fpìl futa nga lu?

or perhaps

Pesut fpìl ngal a fwa nga lu?

I was thinking about this too, but it translates as: Who thinks that you are <something missing here>?

↑ This

I remember Pawl used furia with -pe+, but now I can't find an example. Something like this:

Furia pesu nga lu, pefya fpìl nga?

Furia pesu nga lu, pefya fpìl nga?

Txantsan!! A bit wordy, but is more clear than anything posted so far. Still, this is tough to translate.

Also I think we should use ngenga rather than nga in the question:

Furia pesu ngenga lu, pefya fpìl nga?

Like Ngenga lu pesu? from here

Yes and no. If this question is being asked nicely (which it usually isn't), the honorific form is appropriate, as K. Pawl suggests. But if it is being used in an aggressive or derogatory  manner, then the standard form of nga is more appropriate.

As I am topical fan, I like "Furia pesu ngenga lu, pefya fpìl nga?", although it seems to be too long, compared with english original.
But I think that we can go even closer to the original appearance and meaning, with "Pesu ngenga/nga lu ìlä nga?"

One more version:

  Pesu, tì'efumì ngeyä, ngenga lu?

fì'ut atxan ngerop ngal!

A little bit different tangent, but a good tangent!

And Tanrì's attempt:

Pesu ngenga/nga lu ìlä nga?

To me, this does not make a lot of sense: 'What person, in your feeling, following you?' I kind of see where you are trying to go with this. but in the end, it doesn't make a lot of sense. None of the different meanings of ìlä seem to help.

It is perfectly correct:
Quote from: from Naviteri
By the way, ìlä can be used by itself to mean ‘according to’:

Ìlä Feyral, muntxa soli Ralu sì Newey nìwan mesrram.
‘According to Peyral, Ralu and Newey were secretly married the day before yesterday.’
Correct translation is

Who are you according to you?
Oe lu skxawng skxakep. Slä oe nerume mi.
"Oe tasyätxaw ulte koren za'u oehu" (Limonádový Joe)

With that bit of information, that is brilliant! I need to check if the dictionary reflects this information.

Ngyatxoa, oel yolem tsaylì’ut alu "Pesu nga lu ìlä nga?" luke tìoeyktìng.

I had made a note about this meaning immediately after I saw it on Naviteri, and it intrigued me.
It was the rare case when I updated Czech dictionary before new English PDFs roll out, so I have not checked them.
The meaning "according to" is missing in there.

I saw `Eylan raised the issue on the dictionary thread and I agreed that "according to" should be added to ìlä
