Yes, maybe you're right, I need to get my hands on that survival guide.

But I just realised something else. If we go with Éveng leTaw (Celestial Children), then maybe "huge rock in space" could be something along the lines of (Tsawla) Tskxe leTaw ((big) celestial rock), or?

(No, I'm not that stubborn, I just thought that was a fun way to describe the moon ;D)

Why would they know they were lumps of rock?

The ancient Greeks thought anything that remained still in the sky was a star and anything that moved was a planet so the moon was a planet as were asteroids and comets.

Good point, maybe it's a lump of cheese ;)

I was mostly just goofing off because I didn't have much to do at school today

Based on visuals from the film, and info from the Activist Survival guide, there are, if anything, several words for moon.  But they will mean the moons of Polyphemus, of which Pandora itself is also one.  I doubt there would be anything that corresponds exactly to our idea of moon.

If the celestial bodies that appear in the Pandoran sky are called by individual Names, then can't we Earthings also create and decide our lunar name communally?

Surely we already have, yes?  The name of Earth's moon has two proper names in English: "The Moon", and (less commonly) "Luna".

One of these is very easy to render in Na'vi. :)

At first, I was very dubious about this idea.  The moon is not much like the sun.  But then I happened to be browsing a Hupa dictionary, and sure enough, the word for "moon" is xitł'e'-wha "night-sun."
