Haha, Prrton, you just gave me a mental image of Mo'at with a chem lab in her mouth! ;D

I was trying to avoid yes/no questions (and failed on the last one) because they don't encourage any elaboration. But there's also a danger with too broad questions, he could just choose to answer one part of it (still better than nothing). My #2 and #3 can be merged into something like "How are poisons, antidotes and other forms of drugs (and curing substances produced)?" and the rest of them are pretty related too (e.g. your #3 and my #1) but maybe all this should be left for later when more ideas have surfaced.

As for the Mo'at thing, if she can do that, the rest of them should too. I doubt that becoming Tsahìk would suddenly give her new receptors on her tongue. But it seems a bit too much for everyone to have that ability, and if they do, what makes her special in this case?

Hmm.. long thing.. should I start a new topic?

I think new topics are good I think, then people will be able to chat more freely about things.  I would preface it with "20 Questions:"

I agree that it's time to break these out to topics that start with "20 Questions:" as Keyl suggests so that specialists/enthusiasts can more easily find and SCRUB each area for the best/most important approach to the subject.

Thankyou to Kawazoe and Nickheh for inspiring this question.

How do the Na'vi view and use the concept of time for telling things such as age, annual seasons etc.?
  • Pandora (being a moon) must have some sort of annual cycle. How is this cycle and how are the different seasons known and regarded (or perhaps revered) within the Na'vi?
  • How long is the lifespan of a Na'vi and how are each stage defined in societal expectations and biological (in)capabilities?
  • How long are Pandoran years and days compared to earth and by what measure do the Na'vi coordinate by using the concept of time throughout a typical day?
A big thankyou to DrBinder for creating my forum avatar :)

One of my main things of curiosity . . . if there are other na'vi tribes located throughout pandora, what are their, if they do have them, tribal symbols? Do they all have a basic symbol for eywa, or is it dependant on the tribe themselves?

My biggest questions though, despite pandora being a moon, and from what our current media says . . . hot and humid, what other weather does pandora have, does it rain, snow, shower down odd viscous liquids or gels instead? Does there exist polar regions on the planet, if so, are there snowy areas in those polar regions, if so do the Na'vi live there? How are the storm systems, or are their even storms, electrical, wind, precipitation, dry spells?

IF our atmosphere basically contributes to the colors we see, basically our whole color spectrum, what would make the pandoran sky blue? From our sources the chemical and molecular make-up of the atmosphere is completely different in the concentrations that formulate it. We have some of the same gasses in our own, so in theory wouldnt the sky be a different color because of the different gas mixtures.

THats all for now, if i think of others i may post them later, this two hour rebooting crap from win 7 is driving me crazy, i have already had to type this out three times because of the constant random rebooting. It does not reboot only at 2 hour intervals, quite random, so sorry for the unorganization and errors i dont want to type this a 5th time . . . . *sighs* fricken macro$haft

These shouldn't be questions for James Cameron, but actually for a Team composed of J Cameron, P Frommer, and some skilled astronomist, at leas a PhD physics man, and some imaginative biologists.

However, it's kinda difficult to reunite such a team.

There are definitely some questions I would like to ask about Pandora being a moon of a gas giant, that I don't know if Cameron would be able to answer by himself.  There has been some very good scientific thought about the movie online, but I don't know how much of that type of thought goes into making a Hollywood script.

What is the Pandoran day/night cycle and sky like?
  • What's it's duration?
  • Are there Eclipses (Polyphemus blocking Tsawke)?
  • What's the influence of the other stars in Alfa Centauri on Pandora?
  • Have the Na'vi developed constellation system?

I'd like to add to this a request for the following missing astronomical properties of Pandora and Polyphemus and confirmation of those data given in the ASG:
  • mass
  • diameter
  • rotation periode (around axis)
  • orbital period of Polyphemus/Pandora around Alpha Centauri A (ACA)/Polyphemus
  • orbital Inclination of Polyphemus/Pandora towards ecliptic of ACA/Polyplemus
  • surface gravity
  • orbital radius
  • orbital eccentricity
  • all other fictional astronomical data for the Alpha Centauri A system
That should also allow us to figure out the day and night cycles on our own ... much more fun  ;D

Boy, I’ve got so many things I’ve been pondering. I wonder if I’ll be able to remember them all. They usually come up when I’m half asleep at night and dreaming.

1. What are the details of the Na’vi religion?
-what kind of creation theory do they have? How did Eywa make the Na’vi?
-How do they regard Polyphemus - what do they think of the great eye in the sky?
-What kind of celebrations do they have? Moon alignment, constellations, eclipses, equinox?

uhhhh, let’s see. Somebody’s already mentions time and seasons....good

2.It seems like the Na’vi are somewhat mammalian, so what are the details of their reproduction and child-rearing?
-how many months is a female pregnant? What kind of activities does she participate in?
-are babies born with neural strands? Do they grow later? Is their hair already in a braid or does the mother do that immediately after birth? Do women breast-feed their babies?
-do mother’s establish tsahaylu with their children immediately after birth? Do men establish tsahaylu with their mates to support them during the birthing process?

3. What traditions do the Na’vi have for keeping their history?
-Obviously, the Na’vi keep their history through songs, so who is the Keeper of the Songs?
-What do you call the historian?

4. Do all Na’vi live celibate lives before they mate for life?
-can they experiment with sex and only establish tsahaylu with their chosen mate?
-do Na’vi only have sex to have children, or is it a pleasurable past-time as well? I mean, Jake and Neytiri had sex that night at the tree of souls....

5. How do different tribes differ in traditions regarding the Ruling Couple?
-Are arranged marriages common, or is it just for Olo’eyktan and Tsahik?
-Can a woman rule as Olo’eyktan? Can a male be Tsahik?
-Do the Olo’eyktan and Tsahik have to be a mated couple? Can they be siblings?

6. Can the Na’vi have twins?
-would this have happened before or would it be a new concept introduced via Avatar (Jake Sully) DNA?

Hmmm.  Got some catching up to do, but there are certain things that I saw that I think that I can clarify.

My biggest questions though, despite pandora being a moon, and from what our current media says . . . hot and humid, what other weather does pandora have, does it rain, snow, shower down odd viscous liquids or gels instead? OK, at the start of the movie, when the shuttle is coming down through the clouds, you can clearly see it raining, and I believe (if memory serves me well) I saw some lightning.  so yes there are storms and precipitation.

3. What traditions do the Na’vi have for keeping their history?
-Obviously, the Na’vi keep their history through songs, so who is the Keeper of the Songs?
-What do you call the historian?

5. How do different tribes differ in traditions regarding the Ruling Couple?
-Can a woman rule as Olo’eyktan? Can a male be Tsahik?

Ok for #3 you have to remember that the memories of the people are contained within the neural network that is Eywa, so there is no need for a historian since all that stuff is already being preserved.

Now #5 is easier to answer because there is an example of this in the movie.  When jake is gathering all the clans together for war, when he goes to the "Ikran people of the Eastern Sea" when he is finished with his speech, it is a woman that tells that clan to ride, thus implying that the is the olo'eyktan.  and with this conclusion you must also assume that the Tsahik can be a male.

Hope this clears things up :)

I'm not sure that the information stored within the network of trees (=Eywa) are accessible like in a database. Actually, I rather doubt it. I didn't get the impression it worked that way. When Jake linked to Utraya Mokri he heard the voices of the Omatikaya within Eywa but there was no interaction nor did Neytiri indicate to him that a direct communication was possible. She only said "they live within Eywa". From that I got the impression that they could listen to them but not communicate. I think if communication is possible at all it only goes over Eywa. So this wouldn't really work well as a history record.

I think Neytiri gives us a pretty good clue how they keep track of history when she tells Jake about Toruk Makto: "My grandfather’s grandfather was Toruk Macto - Rider of Last Shadow. Toruk chose him. It has only happened five times since the time of the First Songs."
This is a pretty common practice in societies without a written language. They either have songs that everyone learns or storytellers who have learned the stories from their precursor and teach it to potential successors. The latter is kind of a specialized profession that requires lifelong learning and teaching.

Kaltxì ma mesmuktu Tsu'roen sì Kawng palulukan tutean !

Take a look here for the questions that were sent to Karyu Pawl:  http://forum.learnnavi.org/vocabulary-expansion/20-questions-have-been-sent/

Hopefully we have not made too many assumptions or asked too many questions than can be easily figured out by watching the movie!  Dr. Frommer will be looking them over for a few days and then hopefully we will get a little feedback.  The first step of this project is finished now, a tsawla irayo to all who gave their ideas and recommendations!
