Missing lyrics for "I See You" etc.
« on: March 21, 2010, 09:09:44 am »
I needed some words for the translation of Leona Lewis theme song "I See You" from the soundtrack, among other things.
I tried making some up :P

Noon: kxamtrr (mid-day)

Sacrifice: noun. tìswoksäpi (made this from the Latin: sacrificium/sacer-facere-ium. Literally:(holy-make/do-me). The Na'vi is a contraction of "tì-swok s<äp>i".)

Enchanting: adj. Ronsemyusìm (mind-binding)

into Paradise: proper noun. ne Eywayä tseng (into Eywa's place. Metaphysically speaking I'd probably prefer just "into Eywa" since it matches the panentheism of the Na'vi, but Paradise in English is still a place.)

Surrender: verb. ? (Germanic languages seem to agree on "give up" as a synonym for this. Don't know if it's a universal thing?)

Imagine: verb. Ronsemrel si (mind-image. Might be too literal a translation.)

Free: adj. ke leyìm (unbounded is a lousy translation)

Breathe: verb. ? (can't think of anything here either. Maybe "si" to verbify the word for "lung"?)
Ngaya poanìl new mune 'uti: hrrap sì uvan. Talun poanìl new ayfoeti -- ayfo lu lehrrap ayu leuvan.

sacrifice, paradise, surrender, imagine, free and breath are words in the A-/B-list of the LEP, which is already transmitted to K. Pawl.

would kxamtrr be "mid-day", or "ide"?

I don't see why "kxamtrr" cannot be "mid-day"
Oel ke tse'a pelun "kxamtrr" ke tsun lu "mid-day"

There are many other words in Na'vi that have simple prefixes that work very similarly to the way "kxamtrr" is built, for example;
pelun = for what-reason
fra'u = every-thing
fratseng = every-place

Granted, not everything is this simple and almost everything has to be made by Frommer to be official, but I don't see why this can't work.

Just a thought...

My point was, would it be kxamtrr? or trrkxam? We don't know how compounds work in Na'vi.

I've been using "the arms of Eywa" as a translation for "paradise"--i think it nicely melds the Na'vi pan(en)theism and the concept of a heavenly place.  But of course, i'm biased ;)

It should probably be Eywayä mepun--but, then again, if the Na'vi did say aypun, that would tell us something very interesting about how they perceive Eywa... =)

I figured they wouldn't think of Eywa as an entity with a humanoid form at all. She would have two arms for every person :)

It would definitely be cool if they didn't anthropomorphize (Na'vimorphize?) Eywa--and, hey, if Avalokiteshvara can be depicted as mostly human, but with 1,000 arms, then why not Eywa?

Ooh, hey, zazama pun Eywayä...

This may be a really stupid question :-\
but has anyone ever emailed Karyu Pawl about the lyrics to the avatar score?
If so, what did he say?
