Two words: Plastic surgery.

Same facial structure of the Na'vi and everything ;)

Something like this?

It looks VERY shopped, especially with the crappy webcam, but it was fun.

Wow, that's AWESOME.

The web cam artifacts give it a painted image look.

Left or right, which part part is the real one, that's my question !  ;D
Excellent work though !

Yeah, I'm actually rather envious of that picture. :-P

Makes me almost want to shave and give this a try.

....

Almost.

Yes, since it is a painted image. I can't do 3D...

Lol thanks everyone, I'll try to do a better one with a proper camera once I get the time.

I'm willing to be a test subject, if you want. More than willing. :P

Nume fpi sänume

I too am willing, since I started the thread :P ive also got Photoshop CS3, i just dont know how to use it. If you want to e mail me the history of what you did (i think you can do that?) I can do my picture up and see how it turns out.

Sarkath

Looks like you got yourself in trouble now. :P you make one good avatar and now you have all these "test subjects" because they see how good you are and want avatars of their own.

P.S. I too would love to be a "test subject."

In my defense, i started this thread looking for someone to do it :P but seriously though, if i got the history logs from it i could probably manage.

It's not perfect, but for a first try with only a laptop mouse I think it's not half bad. I'll try again tomorrow when I get my tablet back. :D

Tablet you say?! I can not wait to see how it turns out!  By the way, your example is really well done. :)

I'm sorry, the history is lost once you close the document, it isn't saved along with the .psd file as far as I know... but if I'm wrong and you know how to export it, by all means tell me and I'll send it to you.
Either way, my process is this - I create several blue layers, each in a different tone and shade of blue, and experiment with layer modes until I am satisfied with the skin colour. I often need to tweak the blue colour/greenish colours, so I use CTRL+U to save time. Then I create another layer, set to "normal", and paint over the areas that need remodeling (like the nose, eyes, mouth which in Na'vi is closer to nose than in humans, also Na'vi don't have eyebrows so you need to paint over those too). In another layer I paint the eyes (again resorting to layer modes if need be), and I can use other layers to give highlights to the eyes as well as skin. I completely forgot the ears and mark thingies, but I would simply create a new layer and paint them from scratch.

I'm willing to try it on someone's picture, but please don't be offended if I can't finish it. My school gives us tons of art assignments, which means I have lots of painting and web designing/animation to do, which are very time-consuming tasks. If you're still interested though just send me your pictures or post them here, whichever you wish.

That's very cool, looks a lot more realistic than mine, especially the shaded areas, and less painted. The only things I'd change were the colours (darker perhaps, and slightly more contrasting) and the eye parts, where there is a black outline.
Using mouse on Photoshop can be hell... pen tool can be very useful in these situations.

look at that awesomeness!

tutorial for photoshop (not by me):
QuoteUpon many requests I have decided to write this tutorial on how I created the "My Na'vi Avatar..." photo manipulation, based on the movie "Avatar". When I had originally begun working on the image, I had no idea it was going to end up being so popular, so I am very happy and grateful for all the comments I've received, and I hope this tutorial will be helpful to you. Many thanks.

1. I chose a photograph of myself that was taken with flash photography, as the flash results in an image with a lot of sharp details.

2. I used the program "Photoshop", and first of all created a new "Adjustment Layer" in order to change the "Levels". In the "Levels" menu you'll find three main sliders (which affect the Shadows, Midtones, and Highlights) which I used to create more definition. Every photograph is different, so you will have to play around until you think your image looks "strong". My original photo was very "milky", which doesn't work well for the next step!

3. I selected the "Brush Tool", and changed the brush "Mode" from "Normal" to "Color", and the opacity to "50%". I then used the Internet to search for some movie screenshots of the Na'vi, imported them into Photoshop, and used the "Eyedropper Tool" to select a shade of blue from their skin, and then carefully painted the skin, leaving out the eyes. However, I used about three different shades of blue on top of each other, you'll have to decide for yourself which shades and combinations look best to you. Repeat this until your skin has the desired colour/strength you want. To finish this off, I picked a shade of red in order to do dye the whites of my eyes, and a shade of yellow to dye the irises of my eyes, and then a shade of purple to dye my lips.

4. However, my photo had a couple of areas were the light was reflecting strongly on the skin, which meant they were without any colour and detail. So I used the "Burn Tool" to darken the "Midtones" on those very light areas, you will probably have to re-dye those areas blue again. Then I used the same shade of purple again, and at a very low opacity, to randomly brush over my face, in order to break things up a bit, so it's not all "just" blue - see the difference between Image 3 and 4.

5. I didn't paint the ear! I stole it from an actual screenshot of a Na'vi - where the ear just so happened to have the right angle. After importing the image, I used the "Polygonal Lasso Tool" to select the Na'vi ear, and then dragged it into my image. I then re-sized it and placed it where I wanted it to be.

6. Because the copied image of the ear was overall "lighter" than my own image, I had to darken the ear, to make it fit in somehow. So I used the "Burn Tool", to darken the "Shadows" at an exposure of 5% (or lower). I also brightened some of the areas on the ear, using the "Dodge Tool", and selecting "Highlights". Now I had to make the imported ear look like it's actually part of my image. This will be different for everyone, some of you may have long hair, some short, and in my case a hat was "in the way". I ended up using the Burn and Dodge tools to suggest a hole in the hat for the ear to go through. On your own image however, you may simply "clone stamp" some hair, or skin. And finally I used the Brush tool and selected the blue tone from my face and dyed the blue part of ear with that, to match the two skin tones. And then I did some additional work on the hat.

7. Here comes the most difficult part, the nose! I used "Liquify" in the "Filter" menu, and simply moulded my nose into that of a Na'vi's nose, while checking back and forth on actual screenshots.

8. Then I used the Dodge and Burn tools to further "mould" the nose, by adding and removing shadows/definition in certain places. The Clone Stamp tool is also very important, in order to copy pores/skin texture from other areas on the face into the newly moulded nose area. I also used the "Sharpen Tool" on some areas, to make the pores stand out more. The nose is the trickiest part, and it might take a while before it all looks right, so don't give up.

9. For the eyes, I selected "Duplicate Layer" for the main image, so that I have two identical images lying on top of each other as layers. I then used the Polygonal Lasso Tool and selected an area around one of the eyes (including eyelids) and used the "Move Tool" with the "Maintain aspect ratio" button selected, and enlarged the eye until it looked good to me. Make sure the enlarged eye ends up being in the right place, and not out of place, which you can check by checking the duplicated layer underneath, it shouldn't move its position as such, just go "larger". Repeat the same with the other eye. Then use the "Eraser Tool" or the Clone Stamp Tool to remove "the side effects" of the operation, where the new image doesn't quite match the one below.
Then do exactly the same with the pupils of eyes. Select around the pupils with the Polygonal Lasso Tool, enlarge them, making sure they're in their right places, and then use the "Eraser Tool" on the top layer, in order to bring back the eye lids from the underneath layer. I also used "Liquify" again from the Filter menu, to make the inside corner of the eyes point slightly downwards. Don't forget to use the "Dodge Tool" to highlight the irises, make them lighter and glow a bit.

10. The "markings" on the skin I created with the Burn tool, by darkening the midtones. I also added some white dots here and there, using the Brush tool set to "Normal". And finally I continued to use the Burn and Dodge tools, to darken some areas, while highlighting others, and using the Sharpen tool in certain places. Done.

i didn't do that image (cause i don't want to reveal my self). but that is exactly how mine turned out when i did it on me! i wouldn't mind doing it again! it was fun!
