A couple things I'd suggest:

First off, I haven't yet examined female human to avatar proportions, but from what I can tell they are different, based off of Dr. Augustine's avatar.

That said, I think one of the main problems is the eyes.  Make sure to look at reference, try to find images of avatars eyes within the same general lighting. This will help with coloring of the skin, first off, and secondly the coloring/brightness of the eyes. Avatar eyes are really bright goldenrod yellow to slightly desaturated gold, with a deep rust brown around the perimeter, which can easily become black or blue in the lighting. Additionally, the sclera (whites in the eye) is far too red - I'd keep it more cool, or even desaturated.

So immediately in your avatar, I'd say punch up the brightness of the irises, and desaturate the sclera.  From there I think your best bet would be to readjust the color of the lips. Unless you're a fan of the 'lipstick' look, the only difference in color avatar lips seem to have is a darkening towards the red side of the spectrum.

Finally, consider the light in the photo used. It looks to be about late day/early morning when the sun is low on the horizon. This means it'd be yellow-orangey (as seen in the other parts of the image that arent blued.)   The observed color of a surface is directly related to the kind of light hitting it.  If something reflects only blue, that means all other colors of the spectrum are absorbed. Navi skin, (and skin in general for that matter) doesn't absorb all light other than blue, it reflects a lot of light, but primarily the blues are more reflected than others.  If the only thing that hits it is white light, it says pretty strictly in the blue end of the spectrum. However, when sunlight hits it, the yellow mixes with the blue to create cyans and even some turqouise-greens.  Furthermore, navi skin at its base isn't simply blue. to begin with, it has turoquise, blue, some indigo and a lot of cyan of varying saturation.  Its important then to include all of those colors, and hue variations.  try to avoid keeping the color too local.

I'm planning on writing up some quick tutorials on the Stripes which will provide a pretty easy to accomplish, good looking stripe within the stylistic bounds of what was seen in the movie.  Additionally i'm planning on working towards a more comprehensive analysis of Human to Avatar nasal conversion.

the main issue with my 'avatarization' is that it seems to destroy the nose, bridge, and brow area entirely, which is particularly important for human facial recognition. hopefully in comparing the avatars and photos of the three characters in the movie who are avatarized I can come up with some general aesthetic protocols that can be followed

It may not look as close to the dimensions of the aliens, but it still is a pretty cute looking picture, could be a tribe from another continent on Pandora!
