The change to Wordpress sort of broke a few things, one being the Java client for IRC. The IRC server is still there, but over the last year, the usage has dropped off to almost nothing. IRC as a network application is generally deprecated in the modern world of social media anyway, so we removed the reference to it from the main site page.

the very same java applet can be found on http://tirearadio.com/chat
(I copied it ;D)

But even then, it only logs you into #TireaRadio, you have to still /join #na'vi or whatever

always better in that regard then going to oddball random other chat page

The Java IRC client has always been a bit 'iffy' for me. I finally installed Chatzilla and have never looked back. I like IRC over other kinds of social media because it is 'plain vanilla' and can still do a lot of useful things. Although using IRC has kind of died off here, the Dothraki community uses it quite a bit.

If someone wanted to do an IRC chat here, I would not be opposed to it. My biggest 'problem' is being busy all the time!

IRC <3

Very powerful and extremely useful.

Fun fact: many of the popular real-time communication/chat systems in place today are built with, onto, or using IRC. For example, try using some IRC commands in Skype!

* mikkowilson not only uses IRC every day for both work and play, but also uses scripts to automate and even send notifications to his cellphone.

EDIT:   HA! The above was the output of: /me not only uses IRC every day for both work and play, but also uses scripts to automate and even send notifications to his cellphone ...that I posted entirely as a joke reference to the: /me IRC command. I didn't expect it to parse. Case in point really.

Were you around here in the days of the bbcode 'me' tag? It would do something similar, and it was used in some interesting ways until daddy (Toruk Makto) took it away ;) So, there is even some IRC legacy on this board.

Sadly, the University here has blocked IRC here at work, where I am most of the time, so I have to use an outside network to use IRC. The one I was using has inadvertently locked me out (of everything) and it will be a while before I can talk to the person responsible.

Toruk Makto got tired of trying to explain to noobs how the the whole :me: thing was being used to mislead them for humorous ends...

I really need to get a static IP here...Or get an IPv6 address. Then, I could do just that. But, If there are thousands of IPv6 addresses per square foot of the earth's surface, why is it so hard to get just one (for a computer that occupies about 1.5 square feet of the earth's surface!)?

See if occaid.org has anything you can use for IPv6.

... or not... I don't know if I'm totally going now. I'm actually moving myself to TX tomorrow afternoon. :S

Toruk Makto

ma frapo,

The Java-based IRC client is back online and linked from the main LN web page. I will probably need to put back all the instructions for it that I pulled out of the site guidelines here in the forums.
