what is this karma thing i don't understand what it does

I think this question would have better fit in the "Website-Related" section of the forum, but well!

The concept is that when you think a forum member has done something impressive, helpful or simply great, you can click on [applaud] to give this person one karma point. And on the contrary, if you believe someone is acting badly, is being impolite or such things, you can [smite] him and remove a karma point. The amount of karma points you have is kind of an indicator of your role in this community!

a measure of how many times someone has hit the applaud button minus the times someone has hit the smite button.

it is generally used to measure how helpful someone has been, as people typically give karma (applaud) to people who post useful things or help you in a way that you want to thank them by giving them positive karma. (or as ftxavanga said, stuff that is impressive or great in some way) Smiting will take a point away, typically people dont smite unless offended or if the person did something or said something flat out destructive or offensive in nature.

You give karma to a person who did something great, or who helped you with something..
You can give karma to anyone at anytime.. Give someone karma when you think that the he/she earned it

You can also took one karma from the person, you do that when someone is bad to you or anyone at the forum (but I don't think you'll have a chance to took a karma from one person, here we are all friendly and nice )

Something that hasn't been mentioned here is that you need to have 25 posts for the applaud and smite buttons to appear.

I also think that you can't give karma until you reach 50 posts or something like that. to prevent people from abusing the system with dummy users etc.

You can give karma to someone you think that deserves it or take karma from somebody that doesn't deserve it, but that mostly doesn't happen. To do this you need at least 25 posts. ( Spam posts don't count to you post count. )

Another word for karma that we use here is cookie or some say karma cookie
