The wiki is back online, with all the pre-crash content.  Hooray!

... with the minor caveat that "friendly" link formats don't work.  So any existing links to, say, http://wiki.learnnavi.org/Typing_Na'vi will get you a "page not found".

You have to go to http://wiki.learnnavi.org/index.php?title=Typing_Na'vi instead.

Or you can just go to http://wiki.learnnavi.org/ and follow the links from there!

I you mean the Na'vi Language article on Wikipedia, the content that used to be there has been moved to Wikibooks: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Na'vi

Note that Wikipedia and Wikibooks are both separate from the Learn Na'vi wiki, which is at http://wiki.learnnavi.org/ and has its own collection of interesting and useful pages. :)

The canon-page doesn't seem to be updated any longer. The last entry there is about the Tag Question, dated March 1. Of course I could update it myself, but my time is limited and I'm quite buisy with the LEP and the updating of our Wiki-Vocabulary. Besides that I'm trying to write a Na'vi-poem in order to enhance the corpus of Na'vi-literature a bit.

So this is a kind request to everyone: If there is new stuff released by K. Pawl known to you, please don't post it just here in the forum somewhere, but also in the wiki-canon! The purpose of the wiki is to collect all things connected to Frommer's Na'vi into one point, where it is easily accessible for everyone. Don't let this idea die ... and don't lean just on the wiki-editors to do all the work. We are as busy as possible, but work is much more efficient, if many people take care of certain aspects and contribute to the wiki.

Besides that: The canon-page got very large ... so we should think about reorganizing it. Maybe we could simply open another one, like "Canon 1 (Dec. 2009 - Feb 2010)", "Canon 2 (Mar 2010 - ...)". Suggestions?

I don't know if it's the place to suggest this, but I thought of something. How about using the wiki as a wiktionary?

I mean: each word has its own individual entry/article. Each word can be categorized (eg. [[category:adjectives]], [[category:compounds]], [[category:loanwords]] [[category:body parts]] etc) in order to make the wiktionary flexible like a database.

Furthermore, each word can be discussed at length (eg. its etymology), its source be documented, and we can also provide links to other related words; eg link to words of the same or similar meaning, or words that contain or compose the particular word.

I am sure this will help us index the various na'vi word categories, browse them according to alphabetic order, according to category, and notice their interrelations.

For an example of how this works with Tolkien's languages, you can look here (feel free to browse the links): http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Ambar

I would start with some words and link them and see how it works. It will be a pleasure. Must I ask for some permission from some mod? :)

I'm not entirely sure this is a great thing to do just yet.  Unlike Tolkien's languages, Na'vi words have much less history behind them.  There will not be etymologies for most words, nor comparative work from several languages.

I'm not really opposed to the idea, but I'm not sure the benefits justify the effort.  And I might prefer we had a separate Wiki namespace for words, now that I think about it.  Some admin would have to edit the wiki config file for that.

I think, if it was possible then to add there tons of example sentences for usage, but those have to be more than correct, if you know what I mean. Still I am too not so sure about the benefit/effort thing.

Oel ayngati kameie,

I had a similar thought recently (but didn't write about it because I don't see myself capable of doing this in a way anywhere close to as professional or even usable/correct). What I thought about was less something etymological, but more some dictionary that has sentences from the corpus in it.

So one would have the entry of a word and then all known corpus sentences it appears in. So one could have a better idea of what the word means precisely.

Adding to this, one could also add the explaining words from Frommer to that, like when he explained some word in detail in some E-Mail, we can add this explaination there in the article for the word in the wiki.

I think that would make sense and be useful. One only had to take care to only insert corpus/canon content.

As for the extra namespace: I didn't know this would mean editing the wiki config.

This leads me to another question I have/had: The wiki is intended to serve only as collection of language sources and overviews, right? So it would not be open to community projects? We were talking about this in the Na'vi bible project...

Well, the wiki Vocabulary page does this already, though we don't try to list every occurrence of a particular word, just enough to suggest the broad range of meanings.  This is probably the only added value of the Wiki vocab compared to the other ones available.

It might be usable for that.  I can't think of any reason to exclude it.

Tìmuiäyä'itan

I wasn't aware of the vocabulary page in the wiki...  :P Irayo for pointing me there. Basically I had something like this in mind, just another way of presenting it (though, one could have more info on certain words with one word one page, but I guess this is personal preference...).

About the project on the wiki: I wasn't sure about whether people would like to have the wiki clean from some half-finished projects whatsoever. Anyway, our project 'eyktan is working on a different solution he just said, so, seems we don't need the community wiki...

Due to spamming problems, we have restricted access to the Wiki.  It has always required an account on our wiki to edit pages, but we've stopped letting people create accounts for themselves.  If you want to edit on the wiki, just let us know in this forum thread, and some admin will create one for you.

There's also a note on the wiki front page about this.
