I would recommend posting an account request here, and only if you really need to edit something for the good of the wiki.

Can't you just implement a captcha and/or email activation? (Or is that viciously hard in MediaWiki?) Or is this spam as in vandalism rather than bot spam?

Email activation is useless - that can be scripted and is.

We tried a captcha before, but it had a fight with the version of PHP we were running.  It hasn't been tried recently, but I don't keep tabs on the version of PHP we're using at any given time.

Actually, what should we do about the grammar parts of the Wiki?  I don't really maintain that any more, and focus my attentions on the big grammar.  Those either need some kind soul to keep them up to date, or maybe they should just be retired.  The Corpus and Canon pages are probably the most valuable grammatical assets on the Wiki.

Eltu Lefngap Makto

This is starting to look remarkably fortuitous.  I learn best by making and contributing to a wiki.  My first choice would be to add Semantic Mediawiki (SMW) to the wiki, then it would attract ontology geeks to help.  With or without that, I will be jumping on the wiki starting now.

I realize none of you have any reason to know what I am envisioning regarding semantic wiki.  In an effort to convince you'all of the worthwhileness of it all, I have made a mockup wiki at http://navi.referata.com/wiki/Special:BrowseData.

I'm just starting, but I imagine being able to use the wiki to automatically produce infixed verbs and lenited nouns.  All grammatical features of sentences will be machine-captured, so people can do searches like "All uses of the subjunctive by PF, which have a sound file." or "dialogue from the movie without tense, only aspect."

Semantic Mediawiki differs from plain Mediawiki in that it needs lots of little pages, and then generates lists for you automatically.  Is this  a direction I can get anyone else excited about going in? 8)

Would it be a good idea to store words in a special namespace?
Any way I think maintaining this appear quite time consuming to me but I guess it will be better ordered than one LotR wiki I have seen.
What do you think, would it be possible to store sample sentences or constructs and if some one wants an example with a certain word, those sample which contain the word are returned?

Yes: I do think on a SMW wiki I run on a thumb drive.  I have the entire Bible in Greek, Hebrew, Latin and English.  The Greek texts are available with all grammatical parsing (e.g. 3rd person singular, present imperfect passive and so on).  I run queries all the time like "all uses of a second-person plural verb AND a word derived from LOGOS".

A separate namespace is helpful, but it is nice to be able to use SPECIAL:RANDOM and get a new word.  I use namespaces on mine, but thats because I have four languages.  I would say its not necessary.

As for upkeep, the site is not doing a lot right now.  What I'm proposing would simplify the creation of dictionaries and grammars, because all that information would be on the site and just need typesetting and proofreading.

I know sample sentences can be stored.  I think we could even include the sound files from the movie and Frommer interviews!

Carborundum

I'd like to request an account for myself, with the username Carborundum if possible.
I've recently begun using the Wiki dictionary to maintain my Anki deck, and occasionally I find minor errors (most recently the IPA for tìsla'tsu: [tɪ.ˈsla.ʦu]). If I had an account I could fix these whenever I run into them.
We learn from our mistakes only if we are made aware of them.
If I make a mistake, please bring it to my attention for karma.
