Fìtìkankemìri ngeyä oe seiyi irayo, ma Markì.
Many thanks for this great job and I hope this new server has good anti-RDA shield :) It was long time without connection to Pandora; I hope I didn't forget too much of my Na'vi knowledge.....

I echo Blue Elf and reassure him that I will keep him busy refreshing his awesome skills with our beautiful Na'vi language.  ;D
Glad to hear this, ma Seze Mune :)

Extremely happy that we are back up. I imagine there will be a WAVE of FanFic and RP updates as well as a wave of friends messaging friends.

It is nice to be back, as well. Many feeds that I missed commenting on and reading.

Well, it is very sad only and the whole story was immediately apparently when the box arrived in Houston. There was physical damage to the server consistent with it being dropped. The case rivets had been sheared on one corner and the backplane was bent so badly that the Areca 1120 RAID controller was damaged as well. The 12v rail in the PSU was intermittent and to top it off, three of the hard disks were throwing media read errors. The timing suggests this happened when the server was being moved by Quadranet techs to a different floor of the colocation facility to accommodate IPv6 addressing for us.

I am currently in negotiations with the old colo provider to see if they are going to make good on this since it was their personnel that caused the damage.
And... in Na'vi ?  :o :D ;D ;D

I have also added a 2TB NAS that is NFS mounted on a private GE network connection directly to the server for backups. Since the RAID is now RAID1, we effectively have triple redundancy. And since all of the hardware is brand new, it has a lot of MTBF to go.

`Eylan Ayfalulukanä: I was hoping we wouldn't have anything like that, darn it.  The full dump backups are going to run once a week now, so if you can keep your source material for at least that long to be able to recreate stuff, we should be ok.

Markì

Txantsan on your backup plans. That should benefit everybody here. As for notes, I generally do keep them until too much clutter builds up.....

I found the notes I need to reconstruct things last night. I hope to get it done as soon as I am back from an astronomy festival this weekend.

I just want to throw it in here that some people consider RAID sufficient backup. Luckily this wasn't the case here because then we wouldn't have had anything left.

Since I did a "rm -rf *" in the wrong directory I don't put all my trust in RAIDs only (RAID-1 just makes both HDD LEDs flash happily while deleting 20 GB of data). Having current backups saves yourself from a lot of pain, I learned it the hard way.

Gravity is a bìtch on hard disk drives. Oh, and the complete database is also transmitted nightly to an offsite server in case the colo caves in or something, but we have been doing that since day one.

Our old colo provider, Quadranet, has offered a smallish, but not completely unreasonable amount for the old server. They are not actually admitting guilt, but instead operating in the interests of good will and decency. Thus, I consider the matter closed and hold no grudges against them. After all, they did a good job for the two years we were there. It doesn't come anywhere close to covering the cost of the new server (less than 20%, actually), but in the interests of maintaining good will and harmony, I think it is for the best. I've gotten several server donations from the community and am most grateful for them, but we are still less than halfway to being able to reimburse our financial benefactor. If we can get to $1250, I can cover the rest.

Now if Jim Cameron will just give the Omatikaya a much better new Kelutral in Avatar 2 as well, all will be right in the universe!  :)

To quote my yawnetu; "Just have them pick up the tree and put it back. Or why can't they just live in the big glowing tree?" Heh, she's so cute.

I'm glad they gave at least something for the server. Hopefully we'll have your gracious help repaid soon.

YAY!!!!! I missed all my blue friends! ;) irayo for the new server, and all the work that had to be done!

Toruk Makto

Just a note that I will need to reboot the server tonight to install source and kernel security patches that were not in the install distribution for FreeBSD 8.3-RELEASE.  This will take us to 8.3-RELEASE-p3 and will assure we have a secure Hometree. It usually takes about 3 minutes to reboot, so we will only be unavailable for that time.

All eight of my fingers are crossed. :P

Just kidding, I have full faith that our server troubles are behind us.

Toruk Makto

Oh yeah, this should be much easier than that last "maintenance reboot". I had to restart the new machine several times during the rebuild, so I know it works.  :)

I want to keep the binaries and kernel up to date so that the backup stays current too. That way there would be much less rebuilding if we have to restore from said backup.
