We're back and our brand new server is now online!

The last three weeks have been the longest of my life. With the catastrophic hardware failure we suffered, LearnNavi has experienced the longest outage in its two-and-a-half year history. Through the generosity of a local benefactor who has loaned the funds needed to get the new hardware, we now have an all new server (that just happens to be about 4 times faster as a bonus!). The server cost is about $1,750.00 which is relatively inexpensive as high-end servers go, but definitely will create a hole in my budget as I pay the loaned amount back over the next months. If anyone in the LearnNavi community would like to help recover the cost of the new Kelutral server, you can send a donation via paypal to [email protected]. Drop me a PM when you do so I will know who you are and how much you sent. Anything and everything will be most welcome.

P.S. You will notice that the most recent past messages in the forums are from May 16th. That is the date of the last full system backup that was restored to the new machine. I estimate we lost two days worth of posts, so you may want to go through and re-post anything you find missing.

The Wiki sites for LearnNavi and Dothraki are not happy yet. Looks like some database problem there. Someone that is much better at Wiki configuration will need to take a look.

Thank you so much for neverending and huge effort you give to our Kelutral!
Helping with the money you non-hesitatingly sacrificed for the sake of us all, is the littlest thing we can do.

PS: I apologise for curiosity, but what exactly happened to old box? The pesky power source gave up for good, frying half of components on its way to silicone hell, or this was an example of multiple independent random failures, that only looks as random, but according to Mr. Murphy's laws, occurred inevitably in the same time, same place? ;D

I don't know the whole story, but apparantly the RAID controller failed right after the new PSU had come back online. Seeing how PSU failures usually can result in power spikes this might not have been totally unrelated but a server PSU should have had built in protection against this.

Hopefully this new server should hold though. I can't really say that the 365+ days uptime they had before this failure was especially bad ;)

Well, it is very sad only and the whole story was immediately apparently when the box arrived in Houston. There was physical damage to the server consistent with it being dropped. The case rivets had been sheared on one corner and the backplane was bent so badly that the Areca 1120 RAID controller was damaged as well. The 12v rail in the PSU was intermittent and to top it off, three of the hard disks were throwing media read errors. The timing suggests this happened when the server was being moved by Quadranet techs to a different floor of the colocation facility to accommodate IPv6 addressing for us.

I am currently in negotiations with the old colo provider to see if they are going to make good on this since it was their personnel that caused the damage.

Any idea if they are going to play nice? Begin email bombardment of old colo facility, srak?

So far it has been civil discourse and they are reviewing the event internally with their management to figure out what they want to do.
