So, our dedicated LearnNavi.org server is running out of resources - primarily, memory. We're upgrading to a new server, which will be harder, better, faster, stronger. Yup.

Some upcoming plans for LearnNavi:

  • A Documentary Film about Na'vi (more details coming soon!)
  • A contest in celebration of LearnNavi's 1-Year-Anniversary
  • Dedicated hosting for Project NgayNume and Tirea Radio
  • A functioning multilingual pseudo-translator*. Navilator.com is part of LearnNavi, and we're working on getting it to actually translate, instead of substituting words.
  • A news/press section - backlogging any and all news for Na'vi

The site is still growing, and we're anticipating some huge press coming our way. Can't say anything yet - but stay tuned! :)

There is a s*** of RAM and Storage you got there.

Just out of curiosity, how much are you using right now?

Toruk Makto

The current server has only 4GB of RAM and a single 500GB hard disk. The new one has 16GB RAM and a 1TB RAID5 drive array.

Everything about this seems wrong.

A while back you had another drives to keep the server going, now your asking for more to upgrade the server to a frankly OTT spec, how do you plan on supporting this in the long run?

Honestly, at the moment you have 50 users online. One of my sites has upwards of 10000 users on at any point, and I dont have a server spec that large and it still generates pages in under 0.2 sec and loads them in under 0.5

As much as I am for supporting the site, this smacks of a plain rip off to me.

We're setting up another server for various reasons - slashdot prevention, more memory (which is expensive), redundancy, and backups for our 2.4 GB database, spanning multiple sites at this point. Sorry to hear about your mistrust :(  I'm curious about your 10k site though - and congrats for such traffic!

Thank you everyone who donated!

Nyx

Whoa! 100% already? Was that some kind of a record? :D

For the most part it is a bulletin board.

Currently Active Users
There are currently 16209 users online. 4434 members and 11775 guests
Most users ever online was 63,289

Now yes my site is EXTENSIVELY optimised, and actually consists of 3 clustered servers (one for http delivery, one for media file hosting and storage, one for services (teamspeak, ventrillo, irc, even a text based c++ coded game) but even still, I could, in theory, looking at my server stats, load everything onto one server and still be fine.

Your figures from the outside view just don't add up in my books. It would be interesting to see some of your stats.

None the less, gl with your drive.

What percent of LN.org membership are sysadmins?  I'm happy to donate not to worry about work things while learning a language.  ;)

The server will eventually be running NLP (natural language processing) software to back up some web applications.  This sort of thing can be rather resource intensive.

ToktorGrace

Documentary sounds AWESOME!

Although my language skills are below par.. if I can help with other facets of a documentary I shall be happy to ^^

I know we have some very technical people out there to remind me that the current load is still under the hardware capability. What they don't know is what is planned and the resources they will need. It is hardly a rip off. We are asking for some help, not requiring it and you don't have to do anything to continue using LN resources.

In comparison to what we are running in our broadcast plant, and what the state of the art is for servers. those are not outlandish specs for a high duty cycle web server. If anything, I would have put in more storage (and I hope there is room to add it.) The growing use of multimedia demands that kind of power.

What OS will it be running?

Sounds awesome, wish I had currently more time to come here. :)

The big advantage is that we will be getting off rental hardware and onto a server that we own that is just colo'd.

CPU is 2x 280 Opterons. Not exactly modern, but still better than what we are on now.

OS will be FreeBSD 8 64bit like we have now.

Im sure as the site grows, the extra space will be needed, no?

Sіr. Ηaxalot

Well, they'll have a lot of space to grow on anyway :P

The best with the HDD upgrade won't be the extra storage, it'll be the RAID5 protection (one drive can go down without data loss)

Toruk Makto

Yes, even through we do off site backups on just about everything every night, having RAID capability is going to be priceless.  :)
