I pulled the RDA stickers off of everything, but the blue spray paint idea is not bad....  Maybe with stripes? Or glowy blue LEDs in a pattern or something...  :D

Txantsan regarding the RDA stickers (which I hope you disposed of with the proper ceremonies).

Of course I suspect you know painting electronics would cause all sorts of problems, not the least being thermal management problems. But there is nothing from stopping from hand painting the midchassis rail ta`lengean with some pil. The blue LED idea is intriguing and actually quite doable. Just get a string of blue battery powered Christmas lights. They can be wired into an available 3.3 volt or 5 volt (disk drive power) power connector, with the appropriate resistor in series. I might try that with the next computer I build.

And while bragging about computers, we just instanned a 8-cores-of-xeon, 24 GB RAM, 4 TB onboard RAID server, with a high-end graphics card at work. The graphics card is there only for its GPU, needed for high performance video file transcoding. This monster also has 8(!) NICs. They actually sent us two of these, and have not so far asked for the other one back.....

"With proper ceremony" By that, I presume you mean tossed in the nearest incinerator??

I am not bragging. But if you insist, i am telling you that, the computer i describe above, i made it for my home but if you want to tell you about the job I work i am telling you that we have a render farm with 12 racks. All of them have servers from DELL and all of them have processors xeon quad, the hdds are sas in RAID 5 the administrator and the technician there is me.
P.S. I am working on an TV production company (we produce serials and TV commercials).

überdoodlet

It's like all of LN, could be in there...

It's... eerie...

Marki,
Knowing you, that was probably not any ordinary kind of incinerator.....

You need a render farm like that to produce serials? We don't normally produce serials, but do quite a bit of production here. But we don't have any systems that even come close to that. You must be doing some sort of CGI or VFX to need that kind of computer power. What OS do those systems run?

Did I just see Max Headroom run by?

Not only could that monster hold all of LN, it could probably hold Eywa  ::) (Anyone know what OS Eywa runs?)

The servers of the render farm in our company are running under Linux and the post production's servers of the montage suites (unity) are running under ms server 2003. We create animations, CGI (for commercials, projects etc) with 3ds max, Maya and some self made programs from our programming development team. For montage (for serials etc), we use Avid media composers and Avid adrenaline. ;)

I need a rack cabinet.
And 20 of those new servers.
That, my friend, is hardware porn.

you could get a lot of points if you would use them for folding@home - which would be even more hw porn! Think of it, you could lower your heating bill drastically!

I once heated my house with an automated broadcast spot player, for about 45 days. The machine draws 5.5 kW of power just sitting there doing nothing. Actually worked better than the furnace (which I was trying to replace). But the electric bill????  :o

Hardware porn!

I'm still a bit interested in what you're going to need all that much RAM for though :P

How much did that cost? Or are you renting it?
Forums, mostly, I'd guess, as LN gets a lot of concurrent users.

Webservers need quite a lot of RAM, more than CPU power. So it isn't wrong at all to have enough ;)

Yeah, the more RAM we have the less likely we are to be attacked by the lethal Lagmonster.

My concern is, with more and more multimedia being created, if we are going to quickly run out of hard drive space. At least, drive space is fairly easy to add with a NAS, SAN, etc.

Wonder how long it will take until there is a LN data center??  ::)

I think that it will take a long time until they run out of HDD space, unless they will start hosting videos ::)

I think we will be comfy for a while, at least  ;)

Yeah, if we fill the disk up that quickly we have some issues with things other than multimedia.
