Here is what the new server looks like under the hood. The CPUs are under the black square cover.

Cool :)
Specs? (Or did you already mention them and I missed this?)

Toruk Makto

I mentioned them somewhere...  Anyway, it's a Tyan 1U with dual Opteron 280s, 16GB RAM, 1.5TB RAID5 on an Areca ARC1120 64bit controller.

Hardware porn!

I'm still a bit interested in what you're going to need all that much RAM for though :P

How much did that cost? Or are you renting it?

Hahaha! It even says where to screw it! Lol sorry I couldn't resist. If that's too inappropriate, I apologize and I will remove it.

Every user serviceable part on my IBM systems is eihter violet in color or there is a violet sticker on it. And I have never experienced any problems of any sort with those cases, they are really well build. I've seen some cheapo PC cases that were nothing more than crap, you know, sharp edges and all that stuff ^^

Woa, nice! Do you have it at home or at a data center (i. e. server housing)?

This server will be ours and not rented. It will be living at the Quadranet data center in L.A.  where the current dedicated rental we are using now is located.

Okay, thanks. I just asked because I have several servers at home but only a 3000 kbit/s ADSL line and the upload speed is somewhere around 384 kbit/s which is crap :/
Renting a fast SDSL line is no option because 20 Mbit/s cost around 700€/month. I could rent 10(!) Core-i7 dedicated root servers, each with 1 Gbit/s bandwith for this price o0

Anyway, thanks for keeping the site up & running smoothly :)

I always thought owning your own literal website was easy.

Then I learned they tell you to buy software and hardware.

I don't think that they would even consider to run a website of this site on an home ADSL. ;)

And... is that situation common in Germany? I thought that they would be at least close to the same level as Sweden when it comes to broadband connections. :o

Toruk Makto

Colocating at the data center will allow us to keep the same 100mb network connection we have now. Even though I have a 25M/8M adsl2 connection at home (which is bloody amazing for the US), I don't think it would be reliable enough. Too many people depend on this site to have anything less.

Yes, of course. But maybe there are better lines than here in Germany ^^.

AFAIK it is not very good (at least not among the top european countries). If you're living in a larger city you might have luck and get one of the 100 MBit/s FTTH (fibre to the home) lines or even ones with 1 Gbit/s (though these are available in only 2-3 cities). My server is at my parents and they can't get anything faster than 3k atm though - according to a map of our provider - we are capable of getting a 50 Mbit/s VDSL line (which is way too expensive by the way...)

My brother was in Sweden in October and he told me that they even have public WLAN. You can't even think of it here! There are so many paper-shufflers :(

That is one sweet machine. I'm still drooling over the 16GB of RAM (quadruple the RAM of the computer I'm using now). Very nice that its our own as well, just for the fact that its ours and we won't have to put up with accidental server crashers because our server owners messed up. I've had to deal with that for some CoD clan forums I've been part of.

Great machine.

That wont be much difference, since they're moving from a dedicated box, i.e. they had the root access to it and no-one else.

Kätsyín te Zotxekay Tsyal’itan

Yeah, the dedicated box would help. Now that I think of it, all the CoD forums are run by server companies, so that probably explains alot.
