Every time I stalk the forums, I notice that there are more guests on than members. Like just now I saw that 32 guests were on and only 5 members. I'm just wondering if it's possible to get an average number of guest lurkers that visit LN daily. I'm just curious lol.

There are indeed a number of bots that spider the site. We also get 6 to 8 registration attempts per day from spam bots trying to create bogus accounts, but these are denied by the site automation behind the scenes. Although I don't know the exact number, the largest percentage of guest activity is actually real people who read the conversations on the forums (most of the site is guest-readable), but for whatever reason, have chosen not to register. Of course they would be most welcome to join us!

Hm, too bad most of them are bots, I was hoping they were people checking out the site and thinking of registering. I love taking new members under my wing and showing them the ropes :)

As I stated above, the majority are not bots, but real people.

Every forum attracts lurkers, but also spiders (which are good) and spambots (obviously, not) :P

They go through the forums looking for keywords in posts to drive search engines.  If you have ever seen a Google lookup that included a forum post, that's how it got there.

I don't know about some folks, but sometimes I just lurk and don't log in, because I don't really have time to get drawn into anything and if I log in, I know I'll start getting involved.  ;)It's a rare form of self-discipline.

Google spider bots. Creepy eh?

Trawling through every bit of data you put online... cataloguing it for the world to see. Hope you didn't put something you regret up because google sees all : P
Only mostly AWOL.

Good thing I don't post any sketchy stuff.

Yayo

Woah. Are these bots from competing forums or...?

The spiders can only see what a guest sees. Although we try to keep a lot of the forum visible to visitors,  the community help and LEP boards are not visible to them.
